Default thousands of people in Colorado without heat after attacks on gas lines

https://abcnews.go.com/US/thousands-...ry?id=74948009

Quote:
The FBI has joined a criminal investigation of what police said appears to be an "intentional attack" on gas service lines in Aspen, Colorado, that left thousands of residents and businesses without heat as temperatures in the skiing mecca plunged to near zero degrees.
Work crews are scrambling to restore gas service, and local authorities handed out electric space heaters to residents still without heat Tuesday, as a storm is forecast to bring up to 8 inches of snow in the Rocky Mountains region this week. Temperatures are forecast to fall to 2 degrees in Aspen on Tuesday night, according to the National Weather Service.
Aspen police said the apparently coordinated acts of vandalism occurred Saturday night at three separate Black Hills Energy gas line sites, one in Aspen and two elsewhere in Pitkin County.
At one of the targeted sites, police said they found the words "Earth first" scrawled, and investigators were looking into whether the self-described "radical environmental group" Earth First! was involved.

Hate to say it but we may see a spike in domestic terrorism. Nashville and now Aspen...with a change in presidency I wonder if some will be politically motivated.

I have my doubts that earth first are exactly Trump supporters, or upset that Trump is gone.

Nor are they probably happy that a globalist like Biden won.

If your point is that we don't need gas to survive, and we need to abandon it, maybe choose a better time than the middle of winter. It kind of proves the opposite of your point. And you probably don't make many friends.

seems obvious doesn't it?
Perhaps these tools don't also realize all the fossil-fuel burning vehicles and generators and equipment that may be required to attend to the various sites, to produce power, to melt or stop melting specific fluids/areas. Also that this situation has now substantially escalated all risks for environmental health and safety within the communities as well as (maybe) caused a shortage of necessary services in other areas from which the assistance needs to come.

It's cool, man. They bought carbon offsets and planted some trees.

They might also chop down all of those carbon catching trees to keep warm.

Yikes. The forecast calls for the overnight temperature to fall to -20 Celsius.

"The effort to restore service has been hampered by freezing temperatures and snow in the area. It was 26 degrees in Aspen on Tuesday afternoon, and temperatures were forecast below zero on Tuesday night."

Just wait till they see the gas vented to atmosphere when they purge and pressurize after the repairs are done.

Might seem like a lot to those who don't know/understand how much/often the USA free-vents so many of their gas wells and/or produced gas directly to atmosphere immediately after drilling or during regular operations. Look it up sometime and you'll be blown away how the h*ll they don't attract the same vicious vitriol that Canada does for doing a small fraction of venting.

Fly over Wyoming at night, all you see under you is flaring gas wells.

considering they use nitrogen or steam to purge, and water to hydrotest I don't think they need to be that concerned

Not exactly related but this made me think back to my early days as a Geologist. One of the first projects I worked on was in NE India. There was a series of NG pipelines through the area to deliver the produced gas from the fields and the pipelines generally ran through large tea fields (which was no easy task to negotiate access for.) Along the way there was the occasional towns and in those areas the pipelines needed constant security because the local villagers would frequently tap the pipelines to get gas to their homes and shops. It was pretty ridiculous and ingenious what some folks would do to tap the pipeline. I was told that every week they would have to remove a couple of lines from the pipeline and make repairs.
