Team Canada captain Dach injured ahead of World Juniors
https://sports.yahoo.com/blackhawks-...l.html?src=rss
A wrist injury, with few details. A lingering wrist problem would be a disaster for the 'Hawks, who are counting on Dach to continue to improve his game at the top level, and eat 2nd line minutes.

The Rangers are definitely making a PowerPoint presentation on how smart they are right now.

I'd argue that the risk is worth the reward especially for a team like Chicago who is rebuilding if you can get Dach some more experience in big games. It sucks that he got hurt but I wouldn't be surprised if we see more injuries this year without a proper training camp when the NHL picks up.

Oof that's a major bummer if you are a Hawks fan. Flames fans know that pain from losing Valamaki before last season even started.

Thanks to the mods for coming up with a better topic title. The Americans Press aren't as devoted to following Juniors or amateur competitions, except as they affect NHL teams, and I hadn't considered the context, as relative to Canadians, that Dach is the Captain of your squad for an international competition.
Now, as far as the discussion of risk/reward of allowing eligible professionals to compete, I am a little torn, as to allowing players to compete in such competitions, as I said, Americans aren't as devoted to Junior competitions. But, teams don't want to alienate players who see playing as representatives of their National Teams as an honor. Some of the arguments about the recent Olympic squads demonstrated. (I admit, I hate every aspect of the corrupt Olympic, and would prefer to see it reduced to a mere Track and Field competition.)
I understand that the 'Hawks decided to accept the risk to Dach, and have to live with that decision. But, I also understand where a team might decide that such risks are unacceptable.
We 'Hawk fans will just have to wait to see how bad this injury is, and if it will affect how Dach is used for the upcoming season.

The world juniors are good for a players development.
You can’t predict and worry about injuries unless it’s a situation like Laf where he has nothing left to prove at that level having already competed twice and winning gold.
It was the right thing to do to send Dach.
Sucks but it’s the way she goes sometimes.

What a pity. His puck protection and passing skills remind me a bit of Jumbo Joe in his prime.

Great example of why it's dumb to let young NHL ready players that you're counting on this season, to play in this tournament. A two week tournament mostly consisting of beating down on latvia and belarus is not worth missing an entire "season" of NHL man's game hockey for development. Even if you're the captain. Fans are biased because they like the world juniors and want the best players to play but most GMs are smart enough to see that its an unacceptable risk for roster ready players.

Most GMs want their players to play in it because it is good for their development.

Brian Burke, an actual former long standing GM, exponentially disagrees with you. Listen to today’s Hockey Central at noon for a smack down on that thought process.

...and a fracture is good news, relatively. He will be back in 4-6 or even sooner depending on the bone that broke.

I think for some players who have a great tourney it is likely a positive.
Some kids, who go there and get bumped down the line up, and don’t play well, it can be a confidence blow.
I’d imagine most canadian boys want to play in it because of the hype it gets in Canada. Also, it is one of the harder teams to make when you consider the number of eligible players and the small window of opportunity to play before you age out.
