It's time for the 8th annual Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking, but at a different time of year and certainly at a different time.
First a look back at previous years can be done with this handy link: Previous Results
Once again vote how you want. There are those that vote 100% on potential, some that vote 100% on the likelihood to see an NHL rink, others that apply a mix, some using the value in a trade. Completely up to you.
I'll run one a day until we are done, and then FlamesAddiction wants to do a one off list version to compare the results.
We start with 35 names so this should get us pretty close to a Flames camp.
Hopefully he's due for a huge step forward in his 18yo season.
Ryan Francis looks good too, maybe more talented, but I'm a big concerned at the lack of goal scoring, as that tends not to translate at higher levels (even a guy like Alex Tanguay was a big goal scorer in junior). I guess that's who I voted for anyways, though. Oops.
But if you asked me who I hope it is, it's Eetu Tuulola. He's basically the same package of tools that Leivo has, and was pretty decent in the AHL last year.

Yelesin. I am not sure any of the others ever sniff the NHL. Yelesin already has.
That does not make him him a good prospect, I vote for a players potential/ceiling. Just because a player has or will have a cup of coffee in the NHL doesn’t mean he is getting my vote. Francis for me this round.

I'm going for Yelesin, simply because once you eliminate pedigree, I really liked the way that he played the few times that he got into the lineup. Physical defense first players arn't in vogue right now, but if you want to win you're #6 should be an Englland.

Even if we are voting for potential I still like him here. His potential is Chris Tanev imo.

Yeah, I think that a player like Yelesin suffers in this kind of exercise. Most of us are looking at highlight packages, scouting reports and stat lines to make our choices. Defensive D men require real time viewing to appreciate what they bring to the table. It is the same reason why a guy like Poirier was ranked ahead of Kuvnetsov.
Yelesin will never be a sexy player, but what he will be is a legitimate option in your bottom two pairings. Especially if you are going to pair him with a mobile offensive type player.
Ron Francis for me But in this case, I will take Ryan Francis.
Seems like he has some really good potential, and he seems to play the game 'the right way' so to speak, in having a decent 200ft game while putting up points. That makes it much easier for a coach to insert him into the lineup during injury issues, and then you would hope his skill would keep him there.
Yelesin is next for me - was quite the toss-up for me here. I think Yelesin has top 4 potential. Short sample size, but he was miles better than what I assumed he would be in the NHL. Good mobility, seemed to have a good shot, moved the puck well, seemed to have good gap control, and he was physical. I thought he was good in the games that he played. I saw top 4 potential, though, once again, the sample size is small. He gets my vote next if he is not gone by then.
