Default From the Polish Archives - Old Soviet Nuclear Plans

Pretty interesting stuff here to say the least.

In a historic break with the past, Poland's newly elected government threw open its top secret Warsaw Pact military archives - including a 1979 map revealing the Soviet bloc's vision of a seven-day atomic holocaust between Nato and Warsaw Pact forces.

Be sure to check out the map to see Soviet strike points, and where they assumed NATO would counter attack to.

I guess the millions who marched in the early 1980's for removal of American nuclear warheads from Europe and unilateral disarmament by the West, a gesture of goodwill towards the Soviet Union, were apparently wrong in relying on the good faith of the nice people behind the hammer and scycle.

An over-dramatization by the Polish president though . . . . . NATO probably has some outmoded, dusty plans for exploding a few things themselves.

MADD saved us . . . . . which is why the current time is so much scarier, a time when MADD may not apply.

Nothing against MADD (mothers against drunk driving) but I think you mean MAD (mutally assured destruction).

The price to express Sovereignty, Putin isn't the most understanding man and is quite, well, touchy. You'd think their best interest would be to maintain/build relations with Russia.

He did not deny that the opening of the archives will be seen as a provocation in Moscow. Russian-Polish relations have sharply deteriorated recently, amid rows over a planned oil pipeline, and Polish support for democratic revolutions in Russia's backyard, first in Ukraine, and now Belarus.

I'd be surprised if the U.S., and maybe even Britain, didn't have similar strategies made as contingency plans. They are just better at keeping secrets.

There was nothing nice about the cold war on either side. Unilateral disarmament was just as dangerous for the Soviets.

It'd be interesting to see the whole package, I mean if the Soviets went to that option, we had to know that there was going to be a massive chemical weapons addition to the plan throughout all of Germany since its a total pain in the rear to fight in a chemical environment. For all of thier bad equipment and training, the Sov's were the masters of the combined arms attack, when they hit you they hit you with everything at the same time, Air. Attack Helicopters, Armor, Infantry, Artillary, Nuke and Chemical, all coming down at the same time, its something the Americans really didn't adopt until the first Gulf War.
