Icon38 Flyers sign Erik Gustafsson (1yr, $3mil)

Philadelphia Flyers @NHLFlyers
Welcome to Philly, @ErkanGustafsson!

We've signed the 28-year-old blueliner to a one-year contract worth an AAV of $3.0M. bit.ly/3nKIRdG

His ask from Calgary was substantially more. Wasn't happening here.

That's pretty reasonable. Not surprised at all to see him get a one-year deal.

Seeing the deals for Forbort, Gustaffson, Demelo, Benning, Stetcher, etc really makes me question why we had to give 4 years to Tanev. I'm hoping he surprises me.

Because Tanev is better than those guys

I'm not convinced that Tanev is better than DeMelo at this point. If he continues to decline like he did last season, he won't be. If he plays like he did in the years before that, then he will probably be.

He's way better than the other guys, though.

Tanev is the type of contract you give out when you think you are close to a championship over the first 2 years of the deal and are willing to go all in. The last two years do not matter as much because you think your team is elite now.

I hope you're right.

Just seems like every UFA is signing value contracts and we overpaid for a guy that has been slowing down over the past couple seasons. I've read more than one take saying Tanev was the biggest overpay of free agency.

And older and more expensive. It is kind of apples and oranges but Tanev didn't seem to come at a discount compared to most other UFA's.

Philly has 7.5 tied up in 2 LD PP specialists

Odd move for Philly.

They really didn’t need a poor defensive PP specialist . I thought he would get a lot less, maybe 1 year at $2M at most.

Likely a better fit in Calgary, I thought they used him properly last year.

Well, plainly speaking, that’s absurd. He is a power play specialist and no way the Flames would have offered him 5

Maybe the Flames thought if Gustafsson was going to get 5M that Tanev at 4.5 better be locked up for 4 years.

At least there is a worse UFA signing than Tanev's deal.

My impression was that Gus did not want to come back to Calgary and intentionally priced himself out.

That would be before a bunch of solid NHL d-men signed for 1M.

Not a chance that he will be in the top-4 on a playoff team without 2-3 injuries
