Friedman: NHL votes to "decentralize" the draft starting in 2025
I'm not a fan of this. I like all the teams being together and the players going up on stage and putting on the jersey with the team.
It sounds like they will follow the NFL and NBA where the top players all come together and just meet the commissioner on stage while all the teams' staffs are at home.

This is still developing, but, according to several sources, the vast majority of NHL teams voted to decentralize the draft.
Ballots were due Tuesday, and there clearly is desire to try a new format. Discussions on how to move forward will be at the GM meetings in November and Board of Governors in December.
As a reporter who likes everyone being together for a change, I’m disappointed with the news. But not surprised, as there was growing opposition to the status quo for several reasons. The draft being held on June 28-29 with free agency on July 1 was a major issue. Cost is another. Some teams felt their plans were being discovered because tables were too close and things were overheard.
Whatever the case, I hope the NHL finds a new and interesting way to make it exciting. The NBA now holds an annual convention with its summer league in July. I’d love a similar idea in conjunction with the draft. Coaching clinics, equipment manufacturers, hockey job fairs, fashion/style, music/parties, you name it. Paint a blank canvas.
The new format is scheduled to begin in 2025, with an opening for June if necessary. If this year’s draft is indeed held at The Sphere, I can see the possibility of one final 32-team extravaganza. Go out with a bang.

Yeah, I don't know why they did this. Part of the excitement was seeing all the GMs on the floor talking to each other or on the phone with each other. It was a big promotional weekend with everyone there, but it seems this will make it smaller.

I don't like it either, but the reasoning is sound; too close to the draft, too much of a headache to get back for free agency, too many people trying to travel at once, risk of other people overhearing your draft conversations...
It does suck, but I can see why they're doing it. Although if they made the season shorter, they could just move the draft up, but we all know that's not happening.

Probably because its astronomically cheaper in terms of travel.

They could just move the season up to mid-September and start camp at the end of August. Playing 6-8 pre-season games is too much and camp is too long.

Because the drafts may end up in a Canadian arena and no players want to go there?

Even though he mentioned a bunch of reasons including cost , have to think cost is reason 1, 2, and 3.

I expect an ESG play as well. This saves a decent chunk of jet fuel

This is a terrible mistake. I thought Friedman reported most of the GMs were very opposed to this?

It makes too much sense not to do this. I wouldn't want to make a trip from St Louis to Montreal to get ready for free agency.

Bet this wouldn't happen if it was the fans voting instead of a bunch of executives.

As much as the league will save money, it's going to lose millions in economic intake for host cities.

Ok, so if it is a cost thing, I can understand that. I always kind of assumed that the spectacle made money with TV ads and indirectly through creating attention for the NHL, but if that is not the case, I get it I guess.
As for teams overhearing inside information from other teams, I guess that makes sense. It seems like there could be work arounds to that though.
The timing thing though, about the draft being too close to free agency... is there a reason why the draft has to be at the end of June? They could spread it out and have it in like the 3rd week of July or something. It would probably help keep fans buzzing a little more through the dog days of summer. It would probably also help facilitate trades as teams that missed out on free agent and teams that need to clear cap because of signing free agents, would have a better idea of where they stand.

What and miss out on charging season ticket holders full price for meaningless exhibition games??

The league won’t lose that, the cities will.

Likely so, the fans are not paying the cost.
