Default Japan Continues to Restrict Re-Entry for Legal Residents

(Please move if not appropriate)

Shinzo Abe and the LDP government continue their trek towards authoritarianism - subversion of the Constitution next on the Agenda.

Japan Continues to Restrict Re-Entry for Legal Residents

https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/20...s-coronavirus/

"Japan is the sole Group of Seven member to bar even its permanent and long-term residents from returning to their homes and livelihoods amid the pandemic. Other developed economies, in contrast, have ensured equal treatment to both citizens and long-term foreign residents."

"Japanese nationals returning from abroad are only required to undergo PCR tests when they arrive and are requested to self-isolate for 14 days without any penalties for refusing to do so, a stark contrast to the treatment of foreign residents.....

Funny timing, the rules will be relaxed for foreign residents. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/20...esidents-free/

Still not the best, but it's a start.

The lack of clarity around the re-entry ban on non-Japanese residents has not directly had an affect on me as I am not traveling due to Covid.
But I also can not return from travel if I need to go somewhere.

The question for most non-Japanese residents is where is the LDP Government going with this and why are they doing it.
Of course there is news (today) that the re-entry ban may be lifted but there are numerous requirements that will be difficult to meet or predict,
A very particular type of Covid test, 72 hours before flight a test that is certified and a specific document is issued by the testing agency, reporting for approval before travel and again before returning. In Canada getting a test result within 72 hours is not easy, getting the specific certificate issued in not currently possible and the type of (deep nasal) test is not routinely being administered in Canada.
Its not clear what has to be reported before travel or why it has to be reported or what is acceptable or not acceptable.
So it is still very unclear and it is not clear why the Japanese Govt is pursuing this policy.

Shinzo Abe has resigned somewhat unexpectedly.
It will be interesting to see who takes over and then assess why Abe was pushed out (unceremoniously).
The stated reason was due to Abe's health issues but there is little to indicate that the Ulcerative colitis he has always had was any worse or more seriously impacting his health.
The new Prime Minister will be an interesting indication of how much power the ultra-conservative (right wing) factions of the LDP have assumed control.

"Mr. Abe was largely absent from public view after the coronavirus broke out in Japan early this year, popping up occasionally only to announce ill-conceived policies: His plan to distribute two washable cloth masks — so-called Abenomasks — to every household was quickly derided as futile and inefficient. At the same time, he was still mired in various scandals from the past several years — and still failing to provide convincing accounts of his behavior."

"Mr. Abe had been said to have a soft spot for the docile, if uninspiring, Fumio Kishida, a former foreign minister, but he may now be supporting Yoshihide Suga, his chief cabinet secretary, who is more ruthless, secretive and authoritarian and might have a better chance of defeating Mr. Ishiba."
