AV would get my vote as the winner. He has turned the Flyers into a legit contender for the cup this season. Now, all they need is consistency.

It’s amazing how similar the Flyers and Flames are. I think we could be in the same boat results wise if we can snag Laviolette or Gallant this off-season.

Is it the Jack Adams or GM of the year that gives weightage to the first couple of rounds of the playoffs? If Torotorella is able to go a couple of rounds deep, he should be a strong favourite IMO. Blue Jackets already were decimated with key departures (Bobrosvky, Panarin, Duchene) and on top of that have had a lot of injury troubles.

You could swap out the names in your post and use it for basically every coaching change the Flames have made since Darryl Sutter.

The voting is already done for the Jack Adams. They already have the winner. When they announce the "finalists", they are announcing the top 3 in votes to generate discussion and PR.

He would get my vote. Even without the injuries most would have called them a longshot to make the playoffs given the talent they lost to free agency and they managed to get in position to do just that despite major injury issues. He inspires his players to work hard and play as a team like Darryl Sutter.

Please whatever higher power exists, if any, N.Murray Edwards let us sign Laviolette.

I think AV still had a ton of term at like 5 mill per year. There was no chance the Flames were paying him that while still paying Guly

My vote would be for Torts, the fact that Columbus is in a playoff position with the lack of talent on that team and then losing most of the talent they do have to injury, is incredible.

And the upcoming summer when the Flames will make Ward permanent.

But Tre didn't have a personal relationship with AV. And apparently you need to have a history with a coach to know if he's any good at coaching. Or at least that's been the approach of Flames management since forever.

I have a feeling Tre didn’t know Peters full history...

I think Tortorella or AV are both highly deserving. If the jets made the playoffs (over the course of a full regular season), I think Paul Maurice would have been a finalist for sure.

I still wish the flames got AV as the head coach. My main experience in observing him as a coach was those Canuck teams, and man, as much as there was to hate, their ability to win the puck in the d zone, and IMMEDIATELY move the puck forward to generate a rush with speed was incredible. (as a contrast, I absolutely HATED how slow our team was in getting organized before moving the puck out of the zone. D to D passes are great at times to slow a forecheck, but the flames entire transition game seemed to need an average of 3 d to d passes before trying to move the puck up the ice).

The flames D in the 2016-17 year had Giordano (in his prime years), Brodie, Hamilton, kulak (aside from guys like wideman, engelland, bartowski). But I still feel a coach like AV, and a dcore with the mobile men the flames possessed, the flames should have been way better than they ever were under gulutzan....

Previous work experience together certainly does appear to be a prerequisite to be hired by Treliving. I don't believe he has interviewed a veteran head coach as Flames GM. In 2016 most of the guys he interviewed were coaches that had maybe a single term as NHL head coach as well as Green. Maybe he's intimidated by successful coaches that have been in the league longer than him as he saw first hand a long tenured successful coach in Tippet win a power struggle over Maloney in Phoenix.

It's one of the reasons I was kind of shocked that Treliving has been deemed the 2nd best GM in flames history. Inability to get a proven coach, especially with good ones available while he was trying to fill the role, is definitely part of Treliving's legacy.

Do people forget we won the west last year? It's not like this team was garbage under Peters.

You left out a "not" after "does".

Prior to Ward, Treliving has hired 2 head coaches for the Flames, and the extent of their previous working experience together was two weeks at the World Championships with Peters.

Agreed. AV did a great job with the Flyers but that roster should have been a top team for years now. Coaching and goaltending held them back, now they have both they are dangerous. What Torts did with the Jackets though was by far more impressive to me.
