Hey all. I recall a couple months back someone asking about where was a good place to get auto insurance. I've recently been checking around for quotes, and was _very_ surprised at the range given to me. Meloche Monnex (who I heard about from this board as being pretty inexpensive) quoted me something like $1800. FYI I'm a 24 year old male, no tickets, no accidents, no previous insurance.
My existing provider (under my parents) quoted me $2700!!! When they found out Meloche was quoting a grand less, the lady was pretty p*ssed. THEN she does this whole "let me punch the numbers back in and see what happens" and she MATCHES Meloche! What the hell is going on here?!
Anyway, just thought I'd confirm the earlier rumours, Meloche is definitely one of the cheapest insurers out there, and they've got a fantastic online quote system. Can't wait to drive this baby!

I hope you gave the big F.U. to your existing company and switched. Besides the principle of it, I was hit while parked and Monnex was great at getting everything fixed up for me.
What did you get?

I've always heard about Meloche giving the best quotes and everything... when I called them about my insurance they took down all my information told me they would work out a plan for me and they never even bothered to call back
Its not like I have a horrible record or anything.. (one accident a couple years ago.. and it wasn't even that big.. no one got hurt/no write-offs)
Maybe it was just the agent I talked to but I wouldn't deal with a company that has such bad customer service

I've never got anything but great customer service, and I have heard of them not touching people with accidents with a 10 foot clown pole, so that may have been it. Still.. its really odd you didn't hear back.

Definitely went w/ Meloche. I have little loyalty for insurance corporations, and would prefer they fight to the death for my money, instead of making me make a dozen calls checking around.
The online Monnex quote finder thing is gold though, even if it lowballs you a little bit
Have you guys heard about the new Auto Insurance regulations coming into effect in Alberta? I heard that instead of measuring years insured, companies may be forced to measure years licensed. This will drive my insurance down from 1800 to 1200 by Oct. 1st this year! I've got 1 year insured, 7 licensed, so I happen to benefit greatly in particular

I've always found M/M to have great customer service, so I would think this is an isolated incident (albeit inexcuseable... they should have called you back regardless).
It's important to note that Meloche isn't a public insurance company - you need to be a member of a group that has an agreement with them (university alumni associations, employers, etc.). The reason they have the lowest rates is that they are quite selective about whom they insure... (including those with those previous claims). This may explain why they didn't return your request, although I agree they should have informed you of this!

Ahhhh... that makes more sense then. I'm a U of C alumni, though i'm not sure if i'm officially a member of it yet (just finished last classes a couple days ago). On the online part of M/M quote system, it asks if you're a member of an educational institution. Maybe that's why I got the cheap quote?

I don't miss those days of Alberta insurance. I can't believe how expensive it is. Its ridiculous.
I am a 24 year old male as well with a clean record. My insurance is $380 (per year, not month). That is minimal insurance since I have an older car, but still, the same car cost me $1350/year in AB.

Man is that possible?
I'm in the same boat in terms of age but I do have 2 or more tickets. I'm driving a relatively new car ('01 Civic) and i'm paying $1400 a year through Caldwell. I guess it started at about $190/month a year and a half ago, but it has since dropped to $120.00...the speeding tickets haven't dried up either.
I'm hoping that it will drop some more when I hit the big 25 in October.

I believe rates are dropping something like 75% on october first for people who have clean records. Expensive? No more.

75%????? Seems a little high. I heard rollback of 5-10%.
I also believe younger males (with good records) get a good chunk of the discount as well.

75% is too much, it just opens the door for the stupid young males who think they are race car drivers to get some big fast car and take out a family or kill themselves.
And this is coming from a young male. There is a reason we are charged more, we are a bigger risk.
In an ideal world it would be even until a ticket or accident and then your rates go up but things are not always perfect.

Yes. That is right, so older people get screwed because but the young drivers get cheap insurance...yeah that makes a lot of sense.

Way off...the average person will get about 12.50 back...Under the new system, 24 year old will pay more, if they have two tickets...
This reform only helps the YOUNG drivers, any one over 25 will see a very marginal reduction if any, and will be making it up for the 18 year olds...So really it only helps you for 9 years.
This makes no sense why they did it...
(I work in the industry)

It makes no sense why 18 year old males would have to pay $8000+ for a year of insurance either.
The companies are making record profits but crying poor at the same time. Oh poor them. Boo Hoo. I feel so sad.

The only time I have heard of an 18 year old paying 8 grand is when he has had 6 tickets 2 accidents, and whatever else. I don't think he should drive, but if he does, he should pay that amount.
I agree there has been some problems, but the fix was wrong. The Insurance companies make next to nothing off the premium you pay directly for time there for every dollar they took in they would may a dollar five out. they take that money and invest it, flip on stockmarkets...
I think we need to put a stop to the ridiculous claims, My friend went to Mexico for a month and half, and bought another, after an injury he saw the doctor twice for....

In some cases I would agree...
But I mean, I'm almost 20, been licenced for almost 4 years, no accidents, one ticket over two years ago, so its not even on my record anymore, and I still pay $3000/yr for only PLPD on my rust bucket car worth half that on a good day. That's why they are lowering it for us.
I mean, for "high risk" vehicles, like Honda Preludes or Mustangs or something, I could really see higher rates for those with under 20 drivers... but come on, $5500/yr for full collision on a SUNFIRE?? thats just highway robbery, and the Government knew it and are putting an end to it.

I agree, that is ridiculous, I did not realize it was even that high...I must be on the tail end because I have never paid rates like that...
