Default Calgary Flames All Time Roster - Backup Goaltender

So some details ...

1. Calgary players only
2. I'll look at games played, production and PPG to list options.
3. My cut off won't effect options as I'll go deeper than required

Day to Day

We elect a position, say 2nd line RW, remove that name and do the 3rd line RW the next day.

I'll post a summary as we go along.

Calgary Flames All Time Roster

LW1 - C1 - RW1
LW2 - C2 - RW2
LW3 - C3 - RW3
LW4 - C4 - RW4

D1 - D2
D3 - D4
D5 - D6

I think we know where this is going- but I'll ask now for some clarity (with the usual caveat that people can vote as they see fit)

I assume for backup goalie we are voting for 2nd best goalie- not best backup goalie

similarly in a stacked position like RW RW3 does not have to be some stereotypical Rob Zamuner with RW4 a prototypic goon? (although you could argue there is a defensible choice for RW4 there- at least if we didn't have multiple HOF caliber players play RW)

I certainly see it as the best goaltender left on the board, not the best "backup"

Otherwise it would be a Walmsley / McLennan battle

Vernon is pretty clearly the best goalie left, Wamsley was a great backup though, almost voted for him.

It'll also be tough deciding between voting who would be a better fit on a line vs who is the best available at that position

See I don’t see best fit on the line, I see it as best player at that position. But to each their own.

I like Reggie alot and his claim to this isn't completely ridiculous, but it sort of is

Vernon arrived on the scene as one of 3 key rookies that helped take the team over Oiler mountain in 86, and was there to win it all in 89

I mean, technically our greatest backup was Turek for what he did when Kipper arrived, literally deferring to the backup role and taking a paycut. What a hero.

Vernon is far and away the second best goalie in franchise history.

However, for a “backup” I would suggest Wamsley, Turek or perhaps Noodles just for the locker room presence.

We all knew who the top 2 would be but I think voting for a 3rd string goalie could be an interesting debate.

Noodles is for me....

Still remember him giving the lumber to Detroits Franzen for running Kipper all series.

That alone cemented his status in my mind as the Greatest Backup EVER!!!

I agree.

He had a rough start to the 2003-2004 season, got injured, was demoted mid-season, then came back and stepped in when Kipprusoff was injured later that year. He got some key wins and had some very respectable numbers to keep the Flames in the playoff hunt.

Given that was our most successful season in 31 years, and it wouldn't have been possible without him, my vote goes his way.

Turek, and Noodles are both solid choices but you can't discount Brathwaite, and Tabbi for keeping the young gun era interesting in net .Kidd is one of the most recognizable Flame goalies, and Rittich has potential to be in the conversation if he continues to develop like he is.
That 3rd spot is wide open
