Default Cannonball Run Records

So apparently this is a thing, trying to race across the US from New York to LA in just around 26 hours. Average speeds are around 108 mph, all done on regular highways with various techniques to avoid law enforcement. With less traffic on the roads due to COVID, there has been an increase in the number of people trying to break the record.

Someone in one of my Facebook car groups posted about it. I commented that it seems incredibly dangerous and the disregard for the safety of others is mind boggling. I was pretty much unanimously ridiculed and laughed out of the group - maybe I’m just getting old, but it’s infuriating to me that there seem to be so many people cheering on these activities. If it was their families that got plowed into at 140 mph while going to work or school they probably would have a different view. Anyways, I’m probably here just looking for confirmation that the world isn’t totally bonkers.

Well, they're not going to get plowed into on their way to school, as the route goes nowhere near schools and in fact tries to stay away from civilizationwherever possible... But there is a concern that people who are doing this might be the wrong people, and ill prepared for it. Ed Bolian had so much prep for his record (which stood for years), and had the spotting in place to minimize the risks, such that you wonder whether driving as fast as he did with those measures in place is actually more dangerous than driving 30mph slower alone and tired at night, as thousands of people do. But I'm not sure one way or the other, honestly.

2904 sounds way funner, tbh. I really dig the notion of fast cars avoiding th law, but there is a point where underskilled drivers with oodles of money in modern cars just doesn't seem exciting.

There have been hundreds if not thousands of attempts without any injuries or incidents. The attempts are well planned, and the drivers have to do there best not to draw attention (flying by people). Most are professional drivers with high performance training. They know how to drive fast and limit risks.

Solo run seems exponentially more risky than the 3 person teams that usually attempt this. That's a long time to be driving at that level
