I always remember this statement by JS Giguere, but I can’t find the quote.
Paraphrasing: I’m not very athletic, I’m just good at getting in the way of pucks. I don’t make saves, I block shots.

I had high hopes for Baertschi, had the jersey and everything... (it's now a Hamilton jersey after he defected to the canucks)
Voted for Giguere

I went with Baertschi
Giguere never really found his groove (young) in Calgary, while Baertschi had that electrifying start.
I like Lapointe too, but he only played 32 games for the Flames.

Say what you will about Sven Baertschi, but he worked harder than anyone and was amazing in the community.

Well he did neither in Calgary.
I think this vote illustrates the confusing nature of the vote to me. Giguere would go on to be an awesome player, but in Calgary he was a fourth stringer when we didn't have great goalies. Less than 20 games started, few wins, poor save percentage. We're obviously not comparing him to Iginla, but at least Baertschi contributed to the Flames in the few (but 3x more than JS) games that he did play. Giguere was just sort of here.
If it wasn't for his success after leaving the Flames, this vote is a landslide for Baertschi in my opinion.

Shane O'Brien talked about Baertschi on the Spittin Chicklets podcast. He mentioned how much Hartley hated Sven, and went out of his way to single him out and crush his spirit in his rookie season. He said he'd never seen any player treated worse by a coach in his career
O'Brien had said that it was so bad that there'd be times Sven would nearly be in tears in the locker room. At one point O'Brien said he went into Hartleys office to confront Hartley about his treatment of Sven, and Hartley didn't give a ####. He told O'Brien he was fat and lazy (I don't think O'Brien disagreed lol) and dismissed him. O'Brien ended up on waivers a week or 2 later (he didn't say this was the sole reason, but who knows)

I have to be intellectually honest and say Baertschi deserves this. Played parts of 3 years and was decently productive when in the lineup. Giguere has mediocre to poor numbers as a backup over 2 years. He didn't become good until he left town, just like St. Louis.

Sometimes a vote for Giguere isn’t really a vote for Giguere; it’s a vote for Baertschi not winning.

I remember back in the day we had done a mock draft on CP before Baertschi got drafted. I remember I was high on him, and I think I picked him up too, albeit much higher than he actually went. I really hoped the kid would find his way on to the roster on a full time top 6 basis. I was sad when he got traded, especially to the Canucks.

Clearly it's Ramholt and his 45 seconds of ice time.

I've heard similar stories about young players ... all unfounded, but similar. Add that to some of the stuff that has come out of his Colorado days and there appears to be a bit of a pattern.
For me to say where that line is between toughening young players up (certainly more controversial of a statement with the Peters thing), and literally derailing prospects is a tough call, but you just know it could send players both ways, and that's a dangerous line for a team trying to rebuild.
Baertschi wasn't innocent, and pretty much admitted as much since. But it's hard to find your game if you're given so little room and are bullied like that (if true) off the hop.

the one who got away versus the one that never was

Has to be Baertschi - high draft pick, solid prospect, who had some productive time in the lineup and added some excitement to the team. I don't even remember Gigeure playing a game for the Flames, but I remember Baertschi's rookie season and the high hopes we had for him.

It's also a matter of adapting approach to new generations. What worked 15 years ago, may not be as effective now.
Certainly true in business and probably true in sports.

Flames had some decent goalie talents and they're all traded away because the teams sucked so bad for so long during the Young Guns days. When you talk about a true butterfly goalie, there's no one who plays it to perfection like Giguere.
No way Baertschi is claiming this one. It was just a bad draft year - pretty much everything beyond 10th position onwards in the first round were meh (maybe with the exception of JT Miller from Rangers and Rickard Rakell from the Ducks).

Let Sven win please. Then at least I can say I own an authentic Flames jersey of the best #47 to ever wear the Flaming C. It’s all I’ve got at this point.
