Flames sign Emilio Pettersen to a 3 year ELC

Everything seemed to indicate that he'd be returning to Denver for his third college season. Signing his ELC makes him ineligible for the NCAA, so he'll be playing pro next season (whenever/wherever that may be).

Excellent.
Really looking forward to see what he can do at the pro level or maybe even push for NHL duty.

That's fantastic!
I had a feeling something would happen when Treliving said "signings" this week (plural).

I’m excited for Pettersen. The fact he got inked to an ELC while still being eligible for NCAA, is even more promising.

In his shortened sophomore season, Pettersen put up almost a point-per-game. He scored 13 goals and had 22 assists for 35 points in 36 games for the 5th-ranked team in the nation.
He led the team in points.

$925,000/year according to Capfriendly.
That's first-rounder money.

I always prefer for good prospects at the college level to sign early. They just don't play enough in college to develop a lot. If the kid has the basic skills already down, then put him in the AHL and prepare him for a pro game.

They always put that as a placeholder on ELC signings until they can confirm the numbers.
"UNCONFIRMED: Maximum entry-level contract assumed for the time being, details will be updated when they have been confirmed"

Probably spends a year in the AHL but I could see him pushing for a spot soon

It won't be that far off from that number (guessing).
Another small(ish) forward for Stockton. He and Bubba can fight it out.

This may have something to do with the likelihood there will be no collegiate hockey next year. I have it on good authority that athletic programs in Eastern Canadian universities are planning for no sports, at least for the fall semester.

Not a great angle, but he scored this beauty of an OT winner at the Division 1 World Juniors last year...

The Flames are going to have so many candidates to replace Jankowski and Rieder this coming year...
Pettersen (5'10")
Gawdin (6'1")
Pelletier (5'9")
Phillips (5'7")
Philp (5'10")
Zavgorodniy (5'9")
So many short guys!

This is interesting news.
It seemed like Treliving wanted him to go back for one more year of college based on his comments a few weeks back but this kid is up there with Zavgorodniy as lower rd draft pick guys I have high hopes for.

I won't be too concerned if that is the case.
If he wanted to wait it out, he would probably get as much as a college free-agent.
For next season, he probably gets an AHL salary anyway.
