Default Calgary 2030

Thought experiment:

It’s 2030, Calgary is thriving.

What happened? How’d we go about securing this prosperity?

In your view, what is the mostly plausible scenario by which this happens?

IT capital of Canada. Nenshi is the Prime Minister of Canada with the PC party. All the right wing deplorables in Alberta moved to Montana

Average house price of $750k.

Go pick up those beaters in Forest Lawn now!

Calgary 2021-2028 see’s a mass exodus as a result of both the economic and ecological climate driving hoards away. 2029 it comes to light that the world does, in fact, still need oil to function. Yet another wave of flagrant human rights violations from the saudis, and finally Canada makes the determination to head towards energy security.

One last oil boom. Covid does enough damage to world wide oil that our thermal assets end up being in Demand again as price is in the Goldilocks zone for green energy not to be viable, and shale isn’t viable.

The job losses and Salary cuts during Covid reset the Calgary labour market making diversification possible while oil recovered.

Global warming is now ignored because Covid recovery dwarfed it.

Average Salary in Alberta drops to much closer to the national average, taxes rise, but unemployment also drops as well.

Then in the last oil boom we decide to cut taxes, driving investment and wages higher and piss the last boom away. But in 2030 in the middle of the last oil boom it will be great.

Dusting off the AOSTRA playbook the Government invests in research to turning bitumen into hydrogen and after 4 long years the techniques are economical and widely adopted in Alberta. The oil and gas sector thrives as new markets emerge for Alberta’s ‘new’ export.

Nenshi loses the next election, and Calgarian's elect Lord Darvish, an evil entity from a mirror universe. His team of scientists find a way to weaponize cats, and we make a fortune selling Cat Bombs to third world nations looking for an edge.

War becomes our business, and business is good, as the rest of the world sinks into a post Covid post Apocalyptic poophole where countries attack each other over the most minor infractions.

Using our new found wealth, Calgary jumps into the lead in the aerospace industry and our space program beats the Chinese, Russians and American's to Mars.

Which we of course weaponize.

Inspired a lot of responses! Curious what the CP braintrust thinks - without the 280 character limit.

Cat's wouldn't do well in a low gravity environment like Mars. But ferrets would be like cruise missiles.

I'll give it a go:

The major O/G producers have improved their balances of renewable energy plays, and have switched to being known as "Energy" companies, with a more diversified portfolio as a means of business survival - the world market expects it and great efforts to meet greenhouse gas emissions drive cleaner tech development.

Recognizing the superior talent Calgary has in the field, many late-stage career professionals switch to advising on responsible extraction and use of conventional energy sources while also providing valuable insight for new alternative energy engineers to continue to build new profiles of Lithium, hydrogren, wind, solar and geothermal energy sources. The U of C and SAIT begin to focus more on post-O/G energy development and produce the new crop of business professionals that work downtown.

Once the energy profile shifts, the progressive nature of the industry begins to attract small cap companies and new entrepreneurs that both want to tap a skilled labour market but also have available office and research space that Toronto and Vancouver have oversaturated and still suffer from chronically-high rent and lease rates.

These smaller companies ramp up the volume of contracting opportunities for tech consultants and developers to work integrated with these energy companies, such that the level of cloud-based IoT and advanced SCADA technology is as much responsible for Calgary's renewal as the energy projects themselves. Entrepreneurs now recognize Calgary as the place to build successful startups that help drive forward-thinking energy sources and consumption trends. Additionally, the Alberta Innovation Corridor takes off, and Calgary partners with Edmonton to provide on-demand productions and solutions relating to AI in energy development. This unique and novel partnership is an attractive market for capital investors to place their venture capital, and both cities are more connected than ever before. On a similar note, we are a few steps closer to a train connection along Highway 2.

There is also a new-found respect for the creative and artistic economies after the digital workplace enables people to have more free time and less "in transit" time waste. This leads to generous fund assistance for things like the NMC, Arts Commons, Theatre Calgary, etc. The improved and renewed profile of Calgary's arts and festivals scene allows Folk Fest, Stampede, Sled Island, and Calgary Expo to grow in reputation and promote local artists - especially as tech platforms further enable local talent to get discovered and promoted easier. Many of the downtown office buildings have also been converted into creative spaces with flexible leasing opportunities so that Calgary becomes a known place for artist residencies as a "new West" of creativity

Calgary is also chosen to host a World Expo or major conference that generates a renewed sense of interest in the city between 2028-2030.

Calgarians will still vote generally Conservative (as they've always done) but a near half-decade of UCP austerity and social events that create a sense of community renews hope and implementation of progressive fiscal policies, and the Albertan popular right comes back into the center.

Covid levels the nations of man to a dystopian, post-apocalypic Road Warrior hellscape. The world's most powerful marauders choose Calgary for the construction of the Fortress of Swords due to its rich abundance of scrap iron, gasoline, and cigarettes - the new global currency. And the mountainous terrain offers protection from rival tribes' Killdozer raids.
