Thought I'd shake up the normal Gif, and the queen is 10x the badass Jules ever was.

Goalies are voodoo (especially Flames goalies) but early returns on Wolf are looking good for the acquisition cost
They certainly are but given how amazing he's been in junior you could have drafted him in the 1st round and still be excited about his prospects given the season he just had.

It's weird because the Flames usually spend a 2nd on goalie prospects like this, instead of a 7th
It is amazing how scouts instantly rank a goalie simply on height.
I instantly think of Tim Thomas from the past decade and think, wow you guys do realize that height is not as meaningful as you think.
Also think of the Moneyball scene where they talk about Bradford.
Given how few "small" goalies there are playing the NHL, coupled with how rarely successful they are compared to more typically sized +6'2" goalies, I suspect that height is still a lot more meaningful than you suggest.

It's all academic until he plays at the next level. I remember Leland Irving looking like a world beater in junior only to be exposed at the AHL and definitely NHL level.
Goaltending is a very mysterious animal. Don't try to understand her. Just be happy when you strike gold.

I also remember Leland Irving's first two camps where he was better than anyone not named Kiprusoff and both times he was sent back to Everett. I remember clearly thinking why spend a 1st round pick on a player you give no chance to succeed, Irving had the talent, the mental toughness and the attitude to be very good goalie but by the time he played an NHL game his confidence was shot.

Irving's confidence was shot by the ripe-old age of 23? How on earth did that happen?

He was good, I thought really good, but then be told that you're not good to make the next level every year would crush anyone after a few years. They should have given him a shot but couldn't gamble because they weren't good enough of a team to risk points. They had to ride Kipper and that was what killed his career imo.
Hopefully Wolf has better luck making the team when he's ready.

There's no point in putting your goalie of the future in a position where he's backing up Kiprusoff. He needed to play a lot to develop. So they brought in short-term options and hoped Irving would ripen in the AHL.

I think that simply suggests the Flames were right in sending him back down - as it turned out, he was not in fact an NHL goalie... I think your spin on things is a pretty big stretch, if he was mentally strong as you suggest, his confidence would not have been shot by simply being put through normal goalie development.
