icon57 Redesigning the Flames' jerseys

One of the great things about EA Sports' NHL 20 is its create-a-team function. It allows players to use dozens of templates to customize every inch of a hockey jersey in beautiful 4K resolution.

So, I did just that for two teams: the Islanders, whose CPHL counterpart I manage, and the Flames. (If you venture over into the CPHL forum, you can see my Islanders redesign).

Let's take a look at my designs.

Jersey 1: Black, black, black!

Spoiler!

It should be obvious which past jersey design inspired this one. I decided to retire the Flaming horse head in favour of a duo-tone Flaming C. The waist striping from the original jersey returns in strictly horizontal form -- no diagonals here. Instead of the Flaming C on the shoulder, I decided to put the old Atlanta Flames logo -- I think it looks awesome as a shoulder patch. This was the easiest jersey to design and I think it looks great -- a modern update to a cult classic that takes out the sillier bits and makes it simpler.

Jersey 2: Merging two classics

Spoiler!

I love the 2004 jerseys but the 89 jerseys come really close for me. With this uniform, I tried to bring both uniforms together. The striping at the bottom resembles the 04 jersey, but the colour scheme is all retro. The shoulder yoke is pretty retro, but the lettering is lifted directly from 04.

I think the end result looks pretty nice. It's simple and pays homage to two distinct moments in Flames history.

Jersey 3: Smoldering coals

Spoiler!

I think grey is a super underused colour in the NHL and I think the Flames would do well to use it in a jersey. The shades I used almost resemble smoke. I used a very subdued red for the stripes but a much brighter red on the logo and number outlines -- it's hard to see in the renders but it really pops on my TV.

I think the end result looks like the embers of a campfire. I really love it.

---

What do you think of my designs? Do you have any other concepts to share? Let me know!

really like the first one Scorp. Put Blasty on the shoulder and it's perfect!

White ones look good too, not a fan of the third one though.

My opinion pretty well mirrors devo's. First one is fantastic and second one is also great. Not in love with the grey ones at I see Coyotes with those colors.

I just want to point out one thing -- the colours in the pictures aren't always perfect matches for the colours I picked in the game itself.

For instance, in the third jersey, the lighter grey stripe should be a fair bit lighter than it appears, and the darker grey body of the jersey should be a little darker than it shows. As it is right now, there's not a ton of contrast between the two. I'll see if I can fix it.

Edit: fixed -- I think it looks a lot better now.

I legit made the same jerseys as the first two the other day when I was merging the Alumni, some missing alum and modern team.

I even made a red one which is the same but flipped from the black one.

It's just mindboggling how easy it is to make a nice jersey with the Flames colour scheme and we've had the same unpopular jerseys for over 10 years. This is a fan base that would eat up a new 3rd or retro every year, which is hopefully something we get the chance to do once the shift is made to full retros next season.

I think the grey "smouldering coals" are bad and a bad idea. The rest are ok though.

I love the white ones (with a different shoulder patch). Scorpion, could you do a retro colours red with similar striping to the white and a red with black C with a similar stripe pattern? I think that would make a nice trio.

I can give it a try ^ I think I'll just take the shoulder patches off altogether.

Will advise in a few hrs

I would be a big fan of your black jersey with the red Flaming C logo on the front, As another poster said earlier. Blasty on the shoulders would be a good move. However, I would recommend going with a new collar and a completely new font for the numbers on the back.

I have yet to see a red/yellow/white Flames concept that comes close to our actual retros.

Good try with the gray jersey, but it doesn't work for me.
