One of the great things about EA Sports' NHL 20 is its create-a-team function. It allows players to use dozens of templates to customize every inch of a hockey jersey in beautiful 4K resolution.
So, I did just that for two teams: the Islanders, whose CPHL counterpart I manage, and the Flames. (
If you venture over into the CPHL forum, you can see my Islanders redesign).
Let's take a look at my designs.
Jersey 1: Black, black, black!
It should be obvious which past jersey design inspired this one. I decided to retire the Flaming horse head in favour of a duo-tone Flaming C. The waist striping from the original jersey returns in strictly horizontal form -- no diagonals here. Instead of the Flaming C on the shoulder, I decided to put the old Atlanta Flames logo -- I think it looks awesome as a shoulder patch. This was the easiest jersey to design and I think it looks great -- a modern update to a cult classic that takes out the sillier bits and makes it simpler.
Jersey 2: Merging two classics
I love the 2004 jerseys but the 89 jerseys come really close for me. With this uniform, I tried to bring both uniforms together. The striping at the bottom resembles the 04 jersey, but the colour scheme is all retro. The shoulder yoke is pretty retro, but the lettering is lifted directly from 04.
I think the end result looks pretty nice. It's simple and pays homage to two distinct moments in Flames history.
Jersey 3: Smoldering coals
I think grey is a super underused colour in the NHL and I think the Flames would do well to use it in a jersey. The shades I used almost resemble smoke. I used a very subdued red for the stripes but a much brighter red on the logo and number outlines -- it's hard to see in the renders but it really pops on my TV.
I think the end result looks like the embers of a campfire. I really love it.
