Default Tolerant Nation Banning Burka?

http://jurist.law.pitt.edu/paperchas...slim-burka.php

This just doesn't seem right to me. One of the most tolerant nations in the world, and the first (I believe, correct me if I'm wrong,) to allow gay marriage, is considering a ban on the burka. They're hoping it will assist in assimilating people more quickly.

Seriously, the nation that allows gays to marry and people to be pot heads is not going to allow Muslim women to cover up? How does that make sense?

Maybe they are running out of tolerance.

Interesting quote from the Times

"She (Integration Minister, Rita Verdonk) recently cancelled a meeting with Muslim leaders who refused to shake her hand because she was a woman."

That cant be true! Hate-mongerers from the Times are making stuff up! Muslims respect women!

Take your beef to the Times. But I guess they are right wing fear-mongerers too?

Naw - I couldn't give two craps about their right-wing fearmongering. Just don't like your constant Islam bashing, that's all.

how was he muslim bashing? Some muslims refused to shake a woman's hand, that shows no respect for that woman or her position.

It becomes Muslim bashing when all Muslims are bashed for the actions of a few politicians (which is what these guys must be).

We've had some criminal politicians (who happened to be white and Christian) here in Canada over the last few years. Would it be fair if someone said "well, I guess white Christians are criminals"? No it wouldn't be fair, and it's no different than suggesting that Muslims, all of them, do not respect women, which is what FoL did.

Anyhow, I'll admit that there does appear to be a fair amount of sexism in the Muslim world, but they've hardly cornered the market.

And good on that woman for cancelling the meeting. Those boys 'll have a tough time getting anywhere if they can't even talk to her.

Sorry, I just think that is funny. Not ALLOWING them to cover up? I understand that burka's are traditional and all that jazz... but it depresses me that women are expected to wear those things.

(Although I doubt it will make a difference to anyone who feels I am intolerant, I get ****ed off at the Vatican for refusing to let women wearing skirts or shorts into their buildings as well)

I don't think that they should legislate against burka's though. That is a personal choice and unless they are doing it because there is a big problem with burka wearing theives or something I don't understand how it can be justified by a government.

Edit: In the article it is mentioned that they may conceal the identity of terrorists... so I guess that's how they are planning to justify it. I have doubts that safety concerns are the real driving force behind this though...
