It's been 10 years since one of the most iconic moments in not just Canadian Sports, but Canadian History itself. There are plenty of "where were you" moments in our lives where everyone of us knows exactly what we were doing when it went down, some great, and some not so positive. So lets take this chance to talk about one of the best.
Myself I was at a pub right in the heart of downtown Vancouver. My friends and I caught the first ferry over from Victoria and waited all morning in line to get into the random pub we picked. IIRC they couldn't open the doors until a certain point in the morning due to some regulation around serving alcohol. They had two lines going and as soon as they opened the door and started letting people in the two lines merged into a giant crowd with people who weren't in line getting in first. I grabbed the bouncer and told him how long we had been waiting and he made sure to let us in, and we got the last table available.
After we won and everyone was going nuts (see video below) I received a call from my Aunt and Uncle from Moncton. I couldn't hear a word they said so I just yelled into the phone "I can't hear you, but its time for the anthem. This is how it sounds from downtown." and I just held the phone up for them to listen as the city sang at the top of our collective lungs. Ever since then we've refereed to this in the family as the "Coast to Coast Oh, Canada"
After that we made our way to the massive crowd gathering at Granville and Robson and I got literally in the middle of the intersection and took a photo in each direction. All four angles you see nothing but Maple Leafs, smiles, hugs and high fives. Being 6'5" and taking the photos at eye level its safe to say I had a great view of it all.
Truly one of the best days of my life.
But enough about me, what are your stories?
Here are two of my favorite videos on Youtube of the Golden Goal, and as I watched them this morning the goosebumps came back in full force.

Again, one of those memories you remember you'll have for a lifetime.
Unfortunately, I wasn't at the bar with friends, but I was home with my new sound system and TV, and my wife was out working I think. I jacked the volume up as loud as it could go, and sat about 10 feet from my new big screen. I felt like I was right inside the game. I went through every single up and down, and remember the goal. I remember hearing Sid scream Iggy's name, and I remember screaming as loud as I've ever screamed before and jumping up and down. I nearly cried in that moment with how excited I was. Aside from not being around other people and friends to celebrate with, that is one of my greatest memories.
Oh, and the best thing about it? They won on my birthday.

Was just about to post this. Great hearing Iggy talk about the game:
Quote:
Jarome: When Coach said I was with Sid, I was a little bit surprised. We had so much talent, and he could have picked anybody, but to hear my name … I was excited. Man, I was so excited. All the other feelings were there, too, of course.
But, yeah … gold medal game, overtime, in Canada, against the States.
That’s it, right? That’s the moment every kid in our country dreams of.
I remember Scott Niedermayer saying, “Somebody’s going to be a hero tonight.”
I was there at the game, amoung the first to see the puck go in and celebrate the goal. An amazing moment, I remember asking the usher at the intermission if the Canadians would be attacking towards the side we were sitting on.

We ended up winning the draw to get the opportunity to buy tickets ($855 face value!) to the gold medal game. I remember leading up to the game it was looking like Canada might not even make the game and we had flights booked and were starting to worry we had paid way too much to watch Russia play the states, but it all worked out!
Walking in to the game we had a few offers of $3,000 and up to buy our tickets off of us which was honestly tempting but we had paid so much to get there it was never really an option. Our seats were in the first row of the 2nd bowl in the corner where Crosby skates at the end after scoring the big goal. It was amazing!
Here are some pics from our seats:
Spoiler!

I was watching at home, and when Sid scored I was jumping on the couch yelling "IT'S IN! IT'S IN!". As we were getting closer to my firstborn's due date, I thought my excitement had put Mrs Puppet into premature labour (I didn't).
Immediately after the medal presentation I had to make a run to the grocery store across the street, and decided to take a large flag with me to wave at traffic. Lots of honking horns on my way there and back. Mrs Puppet said based on the volume of the horns, she knew exactly where I was along the street.

Watched that at Schank's South. It was crazy. Naturally the place went bananas but what blew me away was that the initial super loud reaction that normally subsides after 60 - 90 seconds didn't stop. It just kept going and going and going...
Canada's victory in '02 was better and more exciting since the country had not won Olympic gold in 50 years
Never get tired of watching Canada win gold at major international tournaments

Also starring Iggy (2G, 1A and really salted the win away in the 3rd with Sakic).
I was driving out to Springbank for a hockey game and we were all listening to the game on the radio. My dad said something to the effect of "c'mon, Sidney, do something!"
Then he did something.

I'm certain Iggy tipped in the winning goal that was credited to Sakic. If he scored a hattrick and winning goal, he would have been MVP instead of Sakic, IMO
2002 was more special than 2010 because it was the first time Canada won gold in 50 years.
I'm a millennial and I will concede that neither 2010 or 2002 stand above the Summit Series of 1972 or the 1987 Canada Cup.
Sorry to be wet blanket.
Those are all great/iconic moments in Canadian Hockey history, but I think the difference with 2010 was how it was not only on home turf, but also the global stage. Olympics draw much more international attention than the Canada Cup/World Cup/Summit Series.
Add to that the fact that with that game was the final event of the Olympics and also the win gave Canada the final gold medal needed to set the record for all time gold medals by the host country.

Hah. I too was there. I think I had a jager bomb at like 10am.
I have the blu ray box set at home will have to pop this in tonight for a re-watch as well as the game against Russia. What a tournament, what a moment, Iginla may not have won a Cup but 2 Olympic Gold medals are pretty sweet. For me 02 is the bigger moment (They had Mario freaking Lemieux , Joe Sakic, Steve Yzerman come on who can beat those 3) but for the country as a whole this maybe the biggest sporting event ever. 16.6 Million Canadians watched the game, that's half the country. I bet it was even more given how many people were watching at bars/restaurants.
