I wasn't a huge fan of the R. Andersson deal.. but that one is much better than this. Nurse is a decent second pairing guy?

If my math is right, it's interesting (odd) that this buys no UFA years and leaves no RFA years either.
I can't recall any recent midseason multiyear extensions like that being signed in the cap era. Teams typically want one or the other, especially with an early extension like this.

So he signed a 2-yr for $3.2M/yr for the 2018-19 and 2019-20, and signs another 2-yr for $5.6M/yr until 2021.
Sounds to me like another bridge deal (even though he gets to UFA). Edmonton not willing to commit long term at a dollar value that Nurse wants.
$3.2M/year for Kassian
$5.6M/year for Nurse
So $8.8M/year for next year spent by the Oilers in the past month, with the biggest contracts of Sam Gagner ($3.15M), Mike Smith ($2M) coming off the books.
I don't see any big UFA signings coming this summer for the Oilers, so I guess it's another year of improvement from within.

This takes him pretty much out of town as this takes him to a UFA contract. He's not going to show this team any loyalty, and the only way the Oilers get him as a UFA is a deal that he can't say no to,
There will be no free agent signings this year.
this contract takes them to 68 million dollars in place for next year with 13 players signed. They will need 4 forwards 3 defensemen and a goalie.
If the cap goes up by 2 million dollars to lets say 83 million, that's 15 million left for 8 players.
They're boned.

I knew a short term deal around 6M was coming when the Edmonton media started reporting 8M ask...thought they would get more than 2 though

If I’m his agent I’m advising him to test free agency for the next contract unless the Oilers offer a significant overpay, because he’ll get overpaid as a UFA

Wants to be an Oiler. Friends with McDavid (who isn't). Will sign an 8 year 9.5 million extension after the end of next season. McDavid gets traded. Doesn't want to be an Oiler. Sulks for 8 years on the 2nd pairing.
