Default Payroll Question for SMB's

Hi CP,

I swore I'd never do it, but I've moved a few contractors to employees and now have to start doing taxes and payroll again.

How do people do payroll these days?

Last time I did it was with a simple Excel payroll template (which I can't seem to find)?

Any other options you would suggest?

I used to be in the payroll game.

Depending on what you use for accounting software, it probably either has payroll or you can add a module.

You can buy dedicated payroll software that links to your accounting software, but that solution tends to be expensive.

You can use a cloud payroll solution like Ceridian or ADP which both have small business solutions. But you can run into some transnational cost control issues. Either of which works for base payroll, and you will get journal entries in a format that can be uploaded to your accounting system.

Quickbooks is worth the $50/month in my opinion, payroll is built in and they update the tax tables for you.

I use Ceridian for my small business. Super easy and cheap.

I used to use the CRA calculator
https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-age...alculator.html
If you only have a few employees it's fine, free and you can use whatever accounting software and payment system you already use. Once you get say more than 3-5 it's not worth the time and possible errors. I use Quickbooks as well, but they keep upping the price, it's $60/mo now to have payroll.

Anything payroll related is a pain in the a** - use a service like Ceridian or ADP. There is someone always available to do it (if you are sick or on holiday etc.), it's super cheap and if there are super finicky stupid bits that pop up like a miscalculated CPP or remittance or something they deal with it so you don't have to waste your time dealing with it.
