Default Treliving's Talk

I was fortunate to attend at a small pre-game dinner gathering, where Treliving came to speak. He also took a few questions. Here's a summary of what I thought was noteworthy:

- Why Lucic?
- Why not?
- No, seriously?
- James and Milan were both struggling. We thought that a change of scenery could benefit both. He really wants to bounce back. We believe he can.

- Why Talbot?
- We think Rittich will be our guy. He's had a great camp and unbelievable summer training. There was also some dynamics involved. Smithy is very competitive, wants to start every game, dominates, and David was deferring to him a bit too much. It was time to show David that we trust him to be a starter. Cam is also very competitive and he's gonna play. We believe he can be better than he was last season. But we feel David's time has come.

- Do you believe Flames are a Stanley Cup contender with this roster?
- Good question. I don't know, but more accurately, I don't think about it. The league parity is so extreme, just look at the past season. You start thinking about Stanley Cup, you lose track of making the playoffs. We have to make playoffs. We'll keep monitoring the progress of each player. Our roster doesn't look much different from last season, but we finished with 107 points, and I do think we have still made some improvements over the summer.

- What are the most challenges for GM's in modern NHL?
- Parity, by far the biggest challenge. How do you make your team just a little better than your opponents, when every team is so good. Very, very tough nowadays...

- What are our chances against Vacouver tonight?
- I see a couple of blue jerseys here; I will speak slowly for you guys... Vancouver, arguably, made some impressive roster moves this summer. As good or better than many other teams. This will be a battle, for sure.

- Congrats on a new contract.
- Yeah, it was day-to-day, now it's week-to-week...

I think it will be a struggle for the Flames to make the playoffs this year. The roster is largely unchanged with a few minor additions/subtractions and they got the job done last year but many of the teams in the West made much more significant moves. With a few exceptions, I think the competition will be much tougher this year and the Flames will find themselves outmatched.

Flames are not 17 points worse, nor have 8 teams passed them

Serious question:
Which 8 teams do you think got better, and how?

This is of course your opinion, but you've avoided explaining why you think this. You don't mention any of the teams that have improved enough to pass the Flames. You admit the Flames are largely unchanged, so any difference has to be made up by their opponents. Seems like a very poorly reasoned opinion.

There was a spittin chiclets a week or two ago i guess where they had a goalie coach on talking about the relationship between SMith and Rittich and how Smith didn't handle the emergence of Rittich well at all.

It coincides with how we heard so much (relative to never hearing anything) about how well they got along etc etc.

Good summer move then!

Very little chance of an emergence in Edmonton from his battery mate.

with his old pal tippet, it's the perfect situation for Mike Smith to be a martyr.

In his short interview last night, Rittich made more than one comment about coming into this season prepared to be the #1. Referenced playing 60 games.
My interpretation of all this is that the Flames did what they could to make it clear to BSD that he's their #1, but also probably challenged him to take him and grab/keep the role.

Colorado and Dallas certainly improved more than the Flames in the off season. Vegas likely did so as well. Chicago should improve with Lehner joining the team. Vancouver took some steps in the right direction towards moving up the standings this season. Luckily for the Flames the Pacific should be a pretty weak division and the battle in the Pacific will be for 2nd and 3rd with the Flames, Oilers, Sharks and Canucks fighting for those two spots. The Wild Card spots should be easily picked up by teams from the Central.

The classic, two games into the season let's crown the Knights Pacific Champs. There is no competition, everyone else is playing for second.
Yeesh.
The Knights are one injury away from missing the playoffs, like every team.
Maybe we should just watch the games and enjoy.

It very much is a marathon and not a sprint. I still think the Flames will end up north of 100 points. Let's remember that this team was a 107 point team despite losing a bunch of points with suspect play by the goalie. The reason the team didn't have to make a bunch of changes is because they are already a decent team. Other teams are making moves to catch up to the Flames.

Where did Vegas improve? In fact they lost a player or two. The Sharks got worse, not sure about the Canucks. Colorado and Chicago I agree, but there best players continue to age.

How in the hell do you figure the Oilers will compete for as high as SECOND in the Pacific? I'd seriously like to hear your theory.

Be honest: are you a jokester? Because these two posts of yours are either two of the funniest posts I've read on here, or two of the most cringy, out to lunch posts.

No kidding. Only way that happens is if Vegas, Anaheim, and San Jose all lose 2 core players and their starts for the entire season within the next month. Not likely
