That's going to make it tough to sign Pietrangelo.

I’ve always liked Schenn. But this contract takes him to 36 years old. I think 8 years is about 2-3 years too long. It’s not horrible but that’s my initial thought.

Don't teams typically pay for term, not the other way around?

Not when the player starts getting past 35.
I think the deal is solid for the Blues.

AAV seems fine now but I bet this isn't looking so good half way through the contract.

He's on the back half of his prime and I don't see enough over his career to warrant this term.

RFA deals seem to be more expensive on longer term, seems to be the other way around for high profile UFAs

8 years is a lot of years but it is one thing the Blues could offer that other teams couldn't. Makes sense for the Blues to want to keep Schenn and the AAV is good for what he brings. They just won the Cup, so it behooves them to keep the band together

Is anyone worried about Backlund's contact? He is 30 this year and has 4 more years left.
It seems that with the year round training that there a lot more player's playing at a high level at the 35+ year old level.

Also, most teams find a way to get around the ones that don't. LTIR, clever trades etc

Good value for now, and who knows how the Salary Cap will grow after the new TV deal. This contract can even be solid when he is 36. Schenn has been a solid player, and probably will continue to contribute at a similar clip for most of the extension.

With the cap going up, this will turn out to be a solid deal for St. Louis. Schenn will be a good middle 6 center for them in the long run.

Gio looks great at 36. He is singlehandedly helping a lot of these defensemen secure long term deals.

This may be a dumb question, why are they allow to extend player 8 years? I thought they are only allowed to extend 8 years to players they originally drafted. Didn't Schenn got drafted by the Kings?

Draft has nothing to do with it.
It's current players on your team that can be re-signed for 8 years.

Backlund being a third line center on the Flames would be a good problem have. If Backlund is playing on the third line, it probably means the Flames found someone to play on the second line who is better. And it probably means the Flames are strong down the middle.
Either that, or Backlund's play suddenly fell off a cliff. The only one I can see someone taking that spot is Lindholm, who would be a very underpaid 2nd line center.

If a player was on a team's roster at the most-recent trade deadline, and has continuously remained on that team's roster since that time, he can sign an 8 year contract with that team. However, if a player has reached UFA status, the longest term he can sign for is 7 years, even if he re-signs with the same team.
Last season, Mark Stone was able to sign an 8 year deal with Vegas almost-immediately after he was traded because he was traded at the deadline. Erik Karlsson, on the other hand, could only sign an 8 year extension with the Sharks between the trade deadline and June 30 (signing on June 17) because that was the only window in which all the conditions of being able to sign an 8 year deal were present (having been traded in mid-September).
Even though Stone and Karlsson were traded 5 months apart, their window for signing an 8 year deal was the same.
