Default Don’t give refs your time and energy, try it!

No referees, no NHL. They will always be there, sometimes ok and sometimes not so good. But I’ve decided for this season that I will not give them or their decisions any of my time and energy. Officiating is what it is and for most of the time I think it’s pretty good. But it won’t change and I think it ruins sport to have to much focus on it.

So for this season I’ve decided to just accept their decisions and move on. I’ve done it for the first weeks of Swedish hockey and it’s wonderful. Let’s you enjoy the game so much more. Try it! I’m a passionate fan and really care about my teams and winning but I can still do that while keeping my focus away from the referees.

Yeah, that doesn't work when their incompetence costs the team points.

I sincerely respect you if you can maintain this throughout the season.

I've tried it myself... Managed to stick to it for 36 minutes and 42 seconds.

I hear you, not sure it’ll last but it’s worth a try! Same with all changes in life, you have setbacks. It’s about being a new kind of hockey fan! We’ll see how it goes!

I wasn't even mad really but last night's game was just awkward to watch for the first two periods. Apart from the blown high stick, reffing was about equally bad for both sides and it really hurt the flow of what could have been a fun hockey game.

I'm not really bothered by the reffing or the bad penalty calls at this point. Bad penalty calls is one of those things that are always bound to happen.

What I am bothered by right now is the state of the review rule, as the inconsistencies of the rule dictated the outcome in a game immediately to begin the season. It's not even entirely the refs that are to blame for the blown high stick call, it's the book. Every person watching the game, except for the refs obviously, knew that it was a high stick, and still the rulebook made it impossible to do anything about it. It's exactly the kind of reffing mistake the NHL is trying to get rid of, still it seems virtually impossible to get it right. That will keep grinding my gears, as it is bound to keep happening throughout the season for every team.

Also, I do believe that one of the refs should be obligated to answer a few questions from the media after the game, just like the players are. It would be very interesting to hear the refs comment on the high stick play in hindsight.

If I take another long break from watching hockey, game management calls will be the reason

The Vegas Golden Knights literally lost a playoff series due to a bad call, so bad that the NHL was forced to apologize for it.

Refs need to be accountable.

I am okay with garbage officiating if it it is happening for both sides. The refs last night, as much as I hate to blame the refs (always try to avoid to), they were absolute trash.

What do you suggest? Being a ref is hard and you can't just fire a guy after every mistake. The guy you replace him with is likely worse.

All I ask for is less game management and more consistency of calls within the game. If a one handed slash is a slash in period one, it should be in period three also. Next game, if the same slash is not a penalty in period one, then it shouldn't be in period three either.

I'm OK with inconsistency from game to game, but I'd like to see more consistency within games.

The solution, to my mind, is to give off ice and video officials more control over the game. I think it’s ridiculous that the on-ice officials are the ones who review the lion’s share of their own calls. It should be the same group in Toronto for every game. In a game like last night’s the video officials should be able to call in and overturn the high-stick goal.

The game is so fast that the on-ice officials will continue to miss calls—often in baffling fashion. There should be no shame in that, but moreover, this acknowledgement should also open the possibility for video officials to correct those errors without impunity.

This is really not the way to go! Just look at VAR (video assistant referee) in soccer. Decisions in sport is not black or white decisions even if you look at it in slow motion from ten different cameras. There will still be calls made that 50% think is wrong but it’ll take forever with more video reviews. VAR is the proof that referees on the ice is the best way to go and just accept that they will get it wrong somtimes. Use video for decisions like if the puck crossed the goal line.

You're supposed to be able to ignore the refs, ideally. The NHL has made it impossible. I disagree with you that officiating is pretty good for the most part in the NHL. Compared to any other sport I watch, the NHL officiating is the most incompetent and arbitrary, and consistently has a negative impact to the game, and I'm not just looking at Flames games. It seems to have really gotten worse in the past few seasons. We will be talking about the refs a lot this season, I have no doubt.

Also its funny to me that people rag on soccer all the time for its diving. That display last night by the Avs was a joke, but seems commonplace in the game now. Feel the slightest nudge, glove, or stick touch you, and go down. This is the modern game.

Maybe if everyone stopped complaining about the refs we'd send some positive energy to the flames and they would stop doing it too. What is more infuriating than bad reffing are the flames complaining about bad reffing when they aren't going to get anything out of it.

Can I at least give Wes McCauley a little bit of my time and energy? He almost makes me want to like refs.
