After months of deliberation, we finallly decided to go ahead adopt a puppy to join our 2 cats.
Gelli is her name....this pic was taken a week ago, last Friday, and we picked her up last Saturday...she was born July 2, so just 2 months old.
Yellow Lab rescue puppy from Pincher Creek. I have some better pics, but my crapola computer takes forever to d/l them from the camera. Will put them up soon.....
Wow...a long last week with little sleep, to be sure....

The wife and I are thinking of adding a puppy to our family of two cats. Man that puppy is so cute! I wish they could look that way forever.

Congrats on getting a rescue puppy.
And the one thing no one will tell you until you're well into the process - "Puppies are little spawns of hell!!"
Just show patience as they can be difficult . . . . but you'll be amply rewarded about six months from now when all their nasty little habits suddenly disappear.

Yup, I agree. I've been through the full lives of 4 dogs, and they are evil spawns of hell!!!
But so sweet! [ ]

8 posts in, I'll say it - good work naming him something Flames related!
As for house training it: praise him when he does his business outside (and praise him good), and firmly say "no" when he does it outside. Actually, my family and I have had luck, whenever little Chica does something bad, by firmly saying no at whatever it was- now, whenever she's misbehavin' and we say no, she stops. Pretty sure she thinks her name is "No", however.

Thankfully, even though in a townhome, we have Fish Creek 50meters away, and a large wooden deck where Gelli can do her business.....only 4 accidents inside in a week, which is good...so she knows where and when to go.
Leaving her alone for 4 or 5 hours is tough, but she's ok with it, after calming down.
Biting is her big thing now...we're trying new things and they're slowly working.....that's about the only hell that she causes....she doesn't mind the crate, and as along as one of us sleeps within sight of the crate, she's fine for 4 or 5 hours.
Cats are standoffish....as curious as they are getting, they are not big fans that she is a bit bigger then they are, and makes such sudden movments...but she's quiet, and the cats have stopped hissing....
Thanks to all of you who helped me in my choice over the past few months....when Wookie finds me a better computer, I'll get more pics up!

When she bites stick your whole hand into her mouth to the back so she can't close it and firmly say NO BITE. Worked within a week with my Irish terrier puppy.
My puppy will never pee inside but still occasionally has a problem with number 2 inside.

I found with biting you close the puppy's mouth together and say No bite, it works as well. Anything as long as you're consistent, firm, but not angry.
Our breeder (yea, we bought through a breeder) suggested that if she bites you, you yelp like a dog would if they got hurt - didn't work though, the dog thought we were playing, but it might work for yours if all else fails

Even adult dogs grab each other when they're playing, clamping hard and throwing each other around. They have a far different pain threshold than you do.
Puppies do that to YOU because they think you're a dog and part of the pack. Basically they're playing when they grab you with their mouthes, playing as they would with any other dog.
When they're puppies, you have to convince them you're different than a dog.
Its definitely nerve-wracking when your little spawn from hell lunges at your face with teeth bared and snaps its jaws . . . . unless you understand what's behind it.
My two dogs playing, teeth bared.
