So I’ve decided to take the plunge and want to purchase central A/C for my home. Wondering if anybody has experience with these and could recommend a reputable company with a good price.

Don’t really know a lot about these but I have seen ads for around $2,900. Is that an average price or am I looking at a lot more?

Price is based on size of the house. I can't really recommend anyone as mine was put in by a friend but maybe Action Furnace?

Sure have been enjoying AC this week. I've been keeping it at 22 all day, but going down to 21.5 at night as a special treat.

I like it cold and don't care about the cost. 17.5 all the time. Problem is sometimes I do feel cold and turning it up to 19 makes it feel hot. I like lounging in joggers and a sweater though.

I just bit the bullet and got one installed this year too. The installer recommended I don't put it below 20 degrees long term, as it could potentially freeze the coils in your furnace if you have the AC constantly on during hot days. I just leave mine at 21 all the time, and turn it down to 20 occasionally if I feel it still too hot on the 2nd floor.

The problem is I spend all my time upstairs so the main floor gets super cold and upstairs not as much. I blocked a bunch of the main floor vents to get more airflow upstairs which seems to be helping but I would guess its not 17.5 upstairs. The A/C does hit the temp though and isn't running 24/7 so yeah manin floor 17.5.

Yeah the last place we had the coils would freeze up a bunch and I was worried about that with this place but not once.

The guy that installed mine said that a good rule of thumb is approximately 1 ton unit per every 800 sq ft you have. But you have to add the basement sq ft to that calculation. He said you could technically get away with less, but the unit might die earlier as a result as it'd be a smaller unit doing more regular heavy lifting.

I set my main floor to 23 and my installer said to try not to go below 22 if possible which is still very comfortable IMO. I swear my basement is closer to 15C at times due to the way the house heats and cools though even with the vents blocked down there. It's frikken glorious after wandering out of the heat on a hot day and presumably is great for my motley collection of wines.

17.5? Wow. Reminds me of everywhere I went when visiting Atlanta - ice cold temperatures inside despite it being so hot outside. I had to wear a jacket in a few restaurants despite it being 30 degrees outside.

I thought setting the A/C to 23 at night was excessively low when it was hot but apparently I'm way off!

We got central A/C earlier this year and got a new furnace at the same time...all in came in at $6,000, so the estimate seems reasonable (assuming an AC unit and Furnace cost the same amount).

My first year with it, it's incredible. Only bummer is that I still have too much cold air going to the basement. Do you guys have any tips on how to block it more effectively down there? It's like a meat locker.

just make sure your downstairs vents are all closed

im happy my place has really good airflow. theres only like 3 nights per year that it's so hot that i wish i had AC, and we just blow up an air mattress and sleep in the basement on those nights

We have two Lennox units (the house came with two furnaces) and keep thermostats at 20C, the downstairs/basement one rarely turns on.

edit. Got them through Costco about 6 years ago, best purchase ever.
