I always forget Soezza is still in the league. Seems like a decent deal for the Leafs.

That's solid centre depth.
Matthews
Tavares
Kadri
Spezza
I always like Spezza as a player and a person.
Great deal!

Good basically league min deal for the Leafs, which they need badly. Spezza is a 4C at this point but can't go wrong at that price.

I’d be willing to bet Kadri is on the move. And I’d be willing to bet Commodore called the team he’ll be playing for.

This has no effect on Kadri.
Leafs trade Kadri because they signed an aging vet to a 1 year deal? Then the year after they are kind of screwed, no?
They've signed Spezza to.play 4C which is a big upgrade on the Goat who I'm a fan of.

It's going to be weird seeing him in a Leafs Jersey though.
I grew up with him, Alfie and Heatley dominating the league.

Nice story, but spezza isn't a good player at this stage. Healthy scratched last year.

76 and 78 games in each of the last two years to go along with similar numbers. If he matches that production of 8-10 goals 15-20 assists then it’s a solid signing IMO

I think by the end of his contract in Dallas they had him playing wing more

He played ATOI 13 mins and 13.16 mins in each of the last two seasons in Dallas with the following faceoff stats
17/18 Taken 747 | Won 417 | Lost 330 | % 55.8
18/19 Taken 807 | Won 470 | Lost 337 | % 58.2
Those aren’t winger totals

There is more to playing center than taking draws
I definitely remember him being 4th line RW but I don’t know what % of the season it was for

But at 700k who cares. Veteran presence and defensively responsible. He can still play 4c on a team where lines 1 to 3 get 85% of the minutes.

I really like this deal, though. It's pretty much "Hey, we can't afford to pay Marleau $6M, so we'll pay someone kinda similar in usage a tenth of that". There's no downside.

Yes and no. Marleau is a better player right now and still can skate with the young guys. I think people are underestimating his skill in that regard. At $700k getting Spezza is good cost wise and as a hometown boy. He’s no replacement on Marleau in my opinion as I don’t think Spezza has the wheels - especially for the fast paced Leafs. Plus another year older with a guy that has back problems. I do think he’ll have use on the fourth line, but I don’t think he’ll be anywhere near the impact player some still think of. Perhaps a load management approach to develop some other guys will be in order to keep everyone optimal. I’d be pretty surprised if he hits 30 points and I guess as a depth signing that’s good. Nice to see an ex-phenom come home.
