Canucks extend Jim Benning
not surprising given Aquilini's strong endorsement of the Myers and Benn deals

Lololol... So I guess trading a first for JT Miller in a desperate attempt to make the playoffs to save his job wasn't even necessary, then?

How the hell does one get an extension after being the worst team in league combined past few years? I’m baffled.

There were reports that the Canucks were looking to extend him so this doesn't come as a surprise.
Well deserved imo, he's done a great job rebuilding and finding gems in the draft despite not having a 1st OA pick.
I think the excellent UFA signings this summer also gave the Aquas confidence with him going forward.

Really, looking at the Canucks -- they draft well, they sign their RFAs to good contracts. Their trades are hit-and-miss.
But man, their UFAs are just putrid. The only ones I really like are Roussel and maybe Jordie Benn. Otherwise:
- Beagle, overpaid for too long
- Eriksson, overpaid for way too long
- Del Zotto, overpaid
- Myers, overpaid for way too long
- Schaller, overpaid for too long
- Ferland, too much term
- Sutter, overpaid for way too long
- Gagner, overpaid for too long

He's building? Rather slowly, but building nonetheless.
Consider how the franchise has improved in his time compared to how Chiarelli sewered the Oilers WITH McDavid as an asset during his time. He's not great, but he's at least average.

I agree with your assessment except the Myers and Ferland signings.
Myers contract with the Jets was 5m and signed with the Canucks for 6m on July 1st with crazy money being thrown around the league ... how was that an overpayment? a year too long but definitely not overpaid.
Ferland - I don't know how 4 years is too long for a 27 yr old?
