Default Flames MVP - Johnny or Gio?

Article posted by Hockey Writers. Interesting question and tough choice. I think all things considered, the nod goes to Gio - but really a great dilemma for a Flames fan!

https://thehockeywriters.com/calgary...u-or-giordano/

Quote:
Gaudreau has set career highs in goals and points, and he’s put together 25 multi-point evenings – a surefire sign that when he’s on, he’s really on. In addition, he’s become the team’s offensive engine and when they need a big goal he’s typically the guy on the ice counted on to deliver. He plays on the top line and the first power play unit, and has either scored or set up 21 tying goals and 31 go-ahead goals.

Quote:
At 35 years old, Giordano has emerged as one of the NHL’s top defensemen and the Flames’ captain and most consistent player. He plays in every key situation: the top defensive pairing, first power play unit, first penalty kill unit, five on threes, key shutdown opportunities and any other stressful situation. He’s his team’s oldest skater and he’s being asked to carry the mail basically every night from a game management perspective – and the crazy thing is he’s succeeding at it.

It's Gio by a significant margin.

Gio, not close.

Let’s hope that there is a debate again next season as well.

Yeah. Gio.

Johnny is awesome, but Gio is the Rock upon which awesome is built.

Gio. Johnny powers the offence for sure and is the straw that stirs the drink. But Gio's season has changed the entire backend and how it operates.

You could argue for either player and probably not be wrong. But when you have a 35 year old being only the 3rd defenceman all-time to have the season he's having, it's hard not to pick him.

It's unquestionably Gio for me.

In terms of the top ten most valuable Flames, it'd go Gio, Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Monahan, Backlund, Lindholm, Hamonic, Brodie, Rittich, and Ryan.

Johnny had a stronger MVP like mid season month or two but Gio has been dominating night in and nigh out all season.

Gio for premier!

Gio for me.

I’m more concerned about this team if we lose Gio vs Johnny, even despite our D depth.

I have to give it to Giordano on consistency alone. However, I think it's closer than people are saying. It's been really encouraging to see this team's superstar actually go out and try to drive the play and take over games.

It used to be that Johnny was just trying too hard, but now it feels like he has found that next level competitive gear and is grasping what it takes to lead by example on the ice.

The leadership transition is looking just fine with guys like Gaudreau, Monahan, Tkachuk, Backlund, Hamonic, and maybe even Dube.

I think it's a lot more debatable than some of you are suggesting.

Gaudreau is not only the primary driver and catalyst of the Flames' offense, but I would suggest that the offense would be really anemic without him.

If I had to choose one, I would choose Gio, but IMO, it's the combination of the 2 of them. They bring different things, and together, they are the MVPs of a great team.

I've been critical of Gio in the past, but its gotta be him.

Not only is he the leader of the team, on & off the ice, but he's got 73 points AND is having one heck of a great defensive year.

I think Gio is the most consistently dominant player on the team, and it’s hard not to pick him as the MVP. However, if we had to lose one of Gio or Gaudreau for this postseason I think I would rather lose Gio. Johnny is our most important offensive player, by a mile. Our team has had success by scoring a lot of goals, I think it would hurt the team a lot more to lose Gaudreau than Gio.

These guys both have 21 points in 27 since the all star break and Johnny’s include that 6 point outburst.

Gio has been so consistent, at such a high level, that he would be the MVP hands down.
