Put your mind at some ease. Unless you are heavily involved in drugs or gangs, you are vanishingly unlikely to be a random victim of gun violence in Calgary.

Having listened to The Current on CBC quite often, I find it surprising that AMT isn't the target...

Is there ever a circumstance in a developed nation where this should be the first question asked??

First question? Maybe not, but motive is a huge part of any investigation.

No that's a different question than the one I asked. There are lots of lunatics out there and I'm wondering if the shooter was insane, was confused about the address and screwed up, or was mad about something in particular. The article suggests it was targeted so I was wondering the reason. It's kind of the most obvious question to ask here...the first question the cops in a developed nation would ask I'm sure.

I believe this is the second time he has been targetted as well.

I think you missed the point. The question shouldn't be "what did the politician do to piss off the shooter?" This condones and implies that the politician could have done something to not cause being shot at. The asked questions should be around treatment and legal actions for an individual that for whatever reason (illness or otherwise) feels that this is the appropriate response.

Assuming there is no personal relationship...

I am pretty sure the cops care very little about the trigger of this reaction because quite honestly it doesn't really matter what said politician said...the reaction is not justified. I expect the cops questions would be largely around the mental conditions and environment surrounding this individual...

If they know who did it then yeah. You'd want to investigate the suspect and his/her mental state. But if you don't know who did it, a logical point to begin investigating would be to ask, Is there anyone you believe might be mad at you? Considering he is a politician the list of possibilities might be pretty large. Or it could be fairly obviously one or two people who have been threatening him previous to the shooting. Anyway, I'm sure they'll find something to go on and that will likely include a list of people or groups who may have been offended by something he did as a councilor.
