These pictures were taken in Wellington, KS where my Mom and sister live, about 30 miles south of my house. They were taken in front of the local watering hole and as you can see some patrons were more interested in watching than seeking shelter. This happened Friday evening, August 27.

The tornado actually skirted the southern edge of town and damaged only 2 homes but took out some power lines. No injuries. The strange thing is that it was on the ground for around 30 minutes but covered only a mile or so of ground.

It looks much more impressive than it really was as it was announced today that it was an F2 on the Fujita scale.Fujita scale..great information here if you are interested

My Mom and sister both live about 1/4 mile north of where the pictures were taken from on the same street....which is in the opposite direction of where the tornado is.

Sorry for the annoying links...took me forever to find a way to host the pictures and for some reason the board won't let me use the IMG tag with these.

Wow, that looks pretty close to where everyone is standing. I guess people are used to those down there though. Cool, always wanted to see one in person (from a safe distance of course)

Wow, cool pics. Reminds me so much of when I went to Iowa.

That was the first tornado my Mom had ever seen, and she's been here 22 years. They thought it was a lot closer to them than it was. I wonder if that is more due to the physics involved (height of the clouds, viewing over town) or just the excitement of such an event.

I still haven't seen one and would love to from a safe distance and where no one loses property, but I don't intend on living here 22 years to do it!

I wouldn't mind seeing a tornado if I was in a safe far far distance. I would probably crap my pants if I was that close though.

If you have money to blow (pardon the pun) you can join a storm tour and have a good chance of seeing some action from a safe distance. Then again you might see nothing at all and have wasted your cash!

Those are good flames seats eh!
