Question Where does Mark Giordano rank among all-time Flames?

Gio is currently in his 13th NHL season at age 35 and is having his best season and has a strong chance at winning the Norris. He's currently 3rd all-time in franchise history for games played, the 2nd longest running franchise captain behind Iginla, and he's only 7 points behind Paul Reinhart from cracking the top 10 all-time in franchise scoring. Where would y'all rank Gio among the best players in franchise history?

I mean, as obvious as it sounds, it really does depend on what you define as 'best in franchise history'. Some people will look to amount of cups won, or to points produced, or to games played. I personally have no where near the amount of knowledge to grade our players (historical) like this accurately, but from the little I do know, anywhere around 5-10. Again, I could be well off point.

How this season turns out will go a long ways toward establishing his position among the "greats". I was surprised to learn today that he has yet to win a playoff game in his career.

Second-best defenseman in Flames history behind Al MacInnis. Yes, I think he should rank ahead of Gary Suter. He will probably win the Norris Trophy this year, which is (unbelievably) something that no other Flames player has ever done.

This is not true though.

2007 WCQF versus Detroit. Flames won both game 3 and 4 at home after falling behind 2-0 in the series, and Gio was in the lineup for both, even scored a goal in game 3.

Don't know the order, and I didn't watch enough guys play, but I'd guess that these guys are ahead of him.

Iginla
McDonald
Fleury
Vernon
Kiprusoff
MacInnis
Nilsson
Nieuwendyk

He can easily move ahead of a few of those guys based on how this season ends.

Are you basing this on skill or contribution to the Flames?

The way I break it down is by combining a look at overall skill, impact to the franchise, and overall tenure with the team (including retired players only at this point).

Personally for me there is a clear top 3 with Iginla at the top:

Iginla
Fleury
MacInnis

Then you have a second tier of guys that were franchise icons but not quite as elite as the players in the first echelon IMO:

McDonald
Kipper
Vernon

Then there is a third tier of guys that were amazing Flames but maybe not quite as associated with the franchise as the guys in the top two tiers:

Nieuwendyk
Regher
Suter
Roberts

And a fourth tier of guys who were amazing Flames but not quite here long enough (less than 500 games) and didn't retire Flames:

Nilsson
Mullen
Loob
Gilmour

Right now I'd say that with this season, and how good he's been since becoming captain, that Giordano has firmly established himself in the second tier, and if he wins a cup as a Flame that probably automatically vaults him into the top tier with Iggy, Theo, and Mac.

I think I'd put him #5 all-time:

1 Iggy
2 Theo
3 Kipper
4 McInnis
5 Gio

Thoughts?

edit: nm I think I misunderstood.

But I think Gio has to be top 5 most respectable and likeable Flames if nothing else. For that reason alone I would rank him higher than most probably would.

He would have to have a legitimate playoff push on his resume to firmly crack my top 10 Flame list. He's definitely got the regular season success to warrant it, but for me there needs to be more to justify being included as one of the all time greats.....Wait and see. A massive playoff performance would certainly put him into the top 5 neighborhood.

Its a very subjective question with no right or wrong answers.

I can only rank from players I've watched and followed, so basically 2000 and onward.

Iginla
Kiprusoff
.
.
Giordano
.
Regehr
Gaudreau
Monahan
.
.
Conroy
Backlund
.
Phaneuf
Gelinas

Anyone prior to 2000 I can't fairly rank, as I would be basing it solely off of stats and/or other's opinions.

I value contribution to the organisation over skill, I take games played as a Flame heavily into account, as well as, obviously championships and over all success. This is my top ten
  1. Iginla
  2. MacInnis
  3. McDonald
  4. Fleury
  5. Vernon
  6. Nieuwendyk
  7. Giordano
  8. Kiprusoff
  9. Sutur
  10. Nilsson

In my view he ranks right up there at the top of the list and deserves to be so.
I think he should retire as a Flame and his number should be hoisted to the rafters.

He epitomizes this organization and is right up there with Iggy in terms of someone that we should be proud of to wear the Flaming C

And he did all that despite not being drafted.

Most impressive to me is he wasn’t drafted and almost got lost in Russia early in his career. Where he is now is remarkable and definitely puts him in the upper tier

I think the consistency of his play has gotten him into the top 10. With how he is playing now and depending on what happens until the end of his career, that ranking will only go higher. Especially if the Flames go on deep playoff runs or win it all. Could easily end up a top 5 Flame. Jersey retirement is certainly a possibility I'd say.

10 more games and he'll be second (over 400 more needed to take first place).

I don't have the same fondness for the old school flames despite chopper being my favourite player as a kid, the fact that he identifies as more of a Blue than a Flamea puts him down a notch.

To me it's

Iginla

Kipper/Macdonald

GIO

If the flames win the cup and Gio the Conn Smythe in his career he'll vault to #1
