Flames A friendly reminder to Flames fans everywhere: the team is in first in the West

I love trades. Posting ideas in the trade thread is one of my favourite things to do. It's always cool to debate new line combinations or debate the best fits at a certain position.

Vegas fans get to talk about how Mark Stone will fit in their lineup. Dallas hockey fans will debate how Mats Zuccarello will change their lines once he returns. Winnipeg can talk about Kevin Hayes and Nashville can go nuts over Simmonds and that other guy they got, I can't even remember his name.

Congratulations to those teams. They paid assets to improve this year. They did so out of necessity.

The Calgary Flames did not select in the first round in the 2018 NHL draft, missing out on guys like Noah Dobson and Joel Farabee and K'Andre Miller because of it. They have Travis Hamonic, who's a very good player, but to maintain a window, teams always need to be adding to their lineups with an eye to the future.

Trading a second-rounder for a guy like Gustav Nyquist is a shiny move for San Jose, but it's also the move of a team looking solely towards the present. With guys like Erik Karlsson and Joe Pavelski expiring after the year, they have to be all-in. Columbus and Nashville are operating under similar mindsets.

Those teams are adding because they have teams to catch. And this is where the Flames come in. Because before you call for Treliving to be fired and for Valimaki or Kylington to be traded in the summer for more forwards, just remember this...

...and think, are the Flames the team that needs to catch up, or is it everybody else?

The Flames are the best team in the West, and they're primed to add yet another excellent prospect with their first-rounder this summer.

Notice that Tampa Bay didn't really make a move.

Why break chemistry when you are the second best team in the league?

I have zero problems with how today went.

Good on Brad for not panicking. Long term we'll be better for it.

Some people are upset, some people are not upset and some people are sanctimonious.

Guess which is the worst.

Today the Flames acquired Juuso Valimaki, Oliver Kylington, Dillon Dube, and a 1st round pick... by not caving in and holding their line.

This franchise is as healthy and stocked as I can remember going forward. Salary structure isn't out to lunch, lots of young controllable assets, and a nearly full slate of future draft picks.

Oh, they're in 1st place in their conference to boot.

I voted to stand pat and am happy with how the day turned out.

The guys practicing on Long Island are the guys who got the team to best in the west.

The best deadline adds are a healthy James Neal who rediscovers his scoring touch and Mike Smith who remembers how fun it is to play well in the playoffs.

1) Neal coming back to the lineup could be huge for the team down the stretch. Hopefully he can dig out his old sticks and getting that scoring touch again. He was playing better before getting hurt.

2) Valimaki, Stone coming back is a big add to the blueline if they need it.

3) They didn't gut the farm for a rental.

4) Tre did all his big moves in the summer, no need to mess with chemistry at this point of the season.

Good day for the Flames. Tre putting all his chips on the roster we have right now is a big confidence boost.

Just re-hashing what I said in the Zucker thread:

Well I’m pleasantly pleased with today for a few reasons:

1.) Very rarely does the team who makes a huge deadline acquisition do damage in the playoffs. It’s usually the depth pickups (Fantenberg).

B.) Losing a cost controlled, likely future top 2 defenseman for what is now an overpaid winger who’s contract ends at 35 would be asinine.

III.) Getting Mark Stone would all but assure losing Matthew Tkachuk who is younger with a higher ceiling. Sorry guys, no one is talking Neal’s contract to free up cap room.

Four.) As for the aforementioned Neal, if he can turn it up down the home stretch/playoffs we’ve just acquired a deadline acquisition for zero assets. Even Czarnik has been ramping up lately.

Yep, I think Tre was pretty much perfect today.

Getting hanifin lindy and ryan were much better than any deadline move we could make. Knowing ferly probably wont re-sign with carolina is just icing on the cake imo. If guys like czarnik, magiapane, and dare i say neal step up in the playoffs, we will be fine

I'm very impressed with Treliving. It was probably very difficult for him to hold back on making a trade that he thought would help the team going into the playoffs but he showed great restraint and faith in the players he's assembled on the current roster. It tells me that management has a big picture that they are willing to stick to and not change year to year. I still think some big moves will be made at the draft but those moves will be more of the long term variety than rental style trades.

I’m not mad at standing pat. I’m choked teams around (below? Keep that in perspective I guess) us made moves to seemingly get better.
For me, I’ll hold reservation until I see how the boys respond tomorrow night. If they come out flying and confident that the room stayed in tact and that upper management believes in them that’s good enough for me. But if they look disinterested or pouty cuz the team didn’t bring in a “cavalry” so to speak to help them in a cup quest then it could be trouble.
I’m betting on the first scenario, in which case bring on the playoffs.

Bet on the men in the room who have gotten us this far so far, not a bad strategy at all. There is always a part of me that wants to see the Flames add a big piece but Treliving wasn’t comfortable with the cost and I trust him. I like our depth on D and it’s pretty clear how high BT is on Valimaki and Kylington and I’m happy to see them grow within the organization. Seeing San Jose, Nashville and Vegas load up definitely sucks but it’s was never gonna be easy.
