Default Kypreos: Flames 1st round pick is in play

as said on HNIC, but wouldn't give any further details

edit:
Keep in mind that in the last few weeks both Treliving and Conroy have said they aren't interested in trading the 1st for a rental

As it should be. A late 1st is likely going to be a player with upside of a middle six forward or 2nd/3rd pairing D-men. If the Flames can get a guy that they can keep for a while that is a middle six forward, then that'd be a good upgrade.

You never know when you'll have the opportunity to win a cup. Gaudreau or frankly any of the key players could get hurt or regress significantly next year. It can happen.

Why not go for it now and make sure it's something that you can have for later.

If it's for an upgrade that matters, with some term, I don't mind it. That's what you'd hope for with a first rounder anyway. Our players have value, we can deal cap for picks later if we need to.

Just be smart about it.

It seemed to me that he was just throwing out names.

He said “teams we think have their 1st rounder in play”. Kind of a throwaway comment. He wouldn’t even say he’d heard and instead said we and named 3 teams, one of which was Calgary.

If we do give it up, I think it comes packaged with a cap dump or two that also lets us re-sign Tkachuk. Two birds with one Mike Stone.

If the team is capable of making a run, that 1st becomes much easier to lose, especially for the right piece.

Even better if it's a player we can keep, whether they are already signed or if we can re-sign them.

I have never seen a sign in trade in the NHL and as soon as you said Andersson I was out.

You know Stone is probably asking for 9 or 10. Anderson makes nearly 5 and has a year left on his deal

So you want to add about 14 to close to 15 in payroll next year

and subtracting Frolik from next year at 4.3 million>

So we're up 10 million? We'd have roughly 3 million in cap space left and still need to sign MT and Dave and Bennett?

How does that work?

It's not a trade that makes sense for Calgary under the cap and for that reason I too am out, but 1st + Andersson would be a perfectly valid payment for Stone under contract. Andersson's poor underlying numbers suggest he's not exactly a future top pairing guy.

It's just that we can't afford Stone under contract without sending both Neal and Frolik the other way and even then we need to re-sign Bennett, Tkachuk, Rittich, and a backup goalie this offseason. Stone's a pipe dream.

Andersson is, what, 22? I'd not be exactly keen to deal him. Many a great defender has put up less-than-excellent underlying numbers at his age, and the Flames' organizational RD depth is absolutely terrible as it is.
