Icon48 UPD: Kevin Kurz: Bennett won't receive any supplemental discipline for hit on Simek

John Shannon @JSportsnet
League taking a long hard look at Bennett on Simek. Threshold is usually .6 seconds for late hits. This one is right on the edge.

News Update

Kevin Kurz @KKurzNHL
Sam Bennett won’t receive any supplemental discipline for his hit on Radim Simek last night, I’ve been told

Simek passes at 26.4 gets hit at 25.8, close but legal check by the guidelines.

Of course they are. Wonder if they will also take a long hard look at the spear from Dell. My guess: naw.

Who cares.

Bennett making a name for himself, he'll be our Ferland this spring.

That hit doesn't happen if the refs did their job and call the Dell spear. Bennett is understandably ticked off and Simek paid the price.

The hit might have been a bit late by Bennett. But hockey's a fast game, and we're talking 0.2 seconds in the heat of the moment. Easy for us to say when we have the luxury of video slow motion.

But as far as I'm concerned, the league made a pretty big statement when they did nothing about the Backlund hit, which was IMO a much worse head hit. If the hit on Backlund wasn't a suspension, then neither should Bennett's. Bennett's might have been late, but it wasn't a headshot.

The league needs to take some responsibility for missed calls that lead to emotions boiling over and causing this in the first place

If Dumba’s hit on Backlund was deemed clean then there is no reason this shouldn’t be; heck Bennett even made the principle point of contact his chest. Ridiculous officiating tonight where the refs completely lost the pulse of the game. That’s not on Bennett.

No one to blame but the ref and the sharks IMO.

No call on Dell for the good ol' Jamie mclennan swing on Bennet.

Then Kane coming in like a Goon on the previous play.

Late hit but no head shot. This shouldn’t be a suspension if somehow the Backlund/dumba hit wasn’t.

Wasn't late, not head contact. Better be nothing. And Goodrow should get 2, like Lomberg.

They should be looking at it. And a lot of other things from that game too.

They can look at it, but don't think it's suspendable. If Dumba's hit wasn't, then surely this one isn't? with the NHL, you never know.

If they suspend Bennett, then they'd bloody better suspend Dell and Goodrow and Kane.

I would figure that Bennett gets a fine. If he wanted to he could have killed the kid who wasn't paying attention.

Simek was admiring his pass and had his head down.

My late father was a minor hockey coach and would have told the kid to keep his head up next time.

Not sure what we're going to do being down two players, since Backlund is also gone for a while for his Dumba hit, according to Shannon.

Why? This is what gets fans out of their seats. Emotion is what is needed.

The hit isn’t horrible but rationalizing it with keep your head up no longer isn’t good enough for me anymore
