Rasmus Andersson VS. Sven Bärtschi
Rasmus Andersson VS. Sven Bärtschi
Since we're playing Vancouver tonight, I would love everyone thoughts on this trade. I know that Sven is on Vancouver's injured reserved list right now, but would you make that trade today?
I'm really happy with Rasmus, his defense for a rookie has been great, his shot, and the fact that Peter's will play him in any situation including in the final moments of a game that is on the line (and with our goalie pulled).
I just think the upswing potential of Rasmus is way more then Sven, I think with Sven, you're getting all that you can right now and I don't see much growth potential there, and although Rasmus is just starting, he's been pretty awesome already.
Thoughts?

Sven is actually expected to return tonight so that's good for us.
To answer your question I'll say Andersson even though I haven't really seen him play. Right shot Dmen are more valuable then wingers. Canucks are seriously lacking in that department. But I do like Baertschi and I think he's better then some may lead on. He's gonna max out as a 20/20 player, but he's smart with the puck and is responsible defensively.

Rapidly swinging in Flames favor now that Rasmus showing his form at NHL level.
Right shot top 4 or even top 2 potential D man > top 6/9 forward sheltered with high o zone starts (57%).
Sven has exceeded expectations with his 15,18,14 goal seasons in Van. I dont think Canucks are unhappy with trade even now this season's injury aside.
More than makes up for Granlund/Shinkaruk trade. Although that one was a trade of convenience with Granlund likely being waived the next season.

I remember when Sven was our brightest prospect on a very short list, sort of like where Edmonton is today - boy have things changed for the better.

I'd say right now Rasmus has a 3-4 defenceman floor and a top 2 ceiling. That's better than Sven's bottom 6 ceiling on any decent team.
In any event, it wasn't working, he wanted out, he wasn't going to play for the Flames, there was even a risk of Europe, I suppose, so it's like Rasmus was acquired almost for free.

Just on age you take Anderson. Baertschi is a 6 to 8 forward that can be useful. But he's only a year away from being UFA. He never did reach the potential that he flashed in the first couple years after being drafted.
I remember some Winnipeg fan blogger lamenting that they took Schiefele over Baertschi during the 2012 season when Baertschi was lighting upthe WHL....but IIRC he suffered a concussion that year and really wasn't the same after.
This is that rare occasion where the Flames appear to have made good use of the pick.

I don’t think many teams would take Sven over Rasmus. Glad the Flames made good on that draft pick and happy that Sven has been okay (but nothing special) in Vancouver
I remember after that 3 goal in 5 game rookie callup and 2 ppg draft +1 season I drunkenly bet my buddy Sven would score 30 as a rookie but thankfully the lockout shortened season killed the bet. We were so starved for an offensive prospect like Sven so badly back then.

But... was that because of the coach? I bet that if we had Peters back then, that he would have been used more - just a thought.

Oh yes... I remember the hype of him being called up - Jerome 2.

Probably used even less. Peters doesn’t seem like the coach that would be okay with a prospect being complacent defensively.

I had the chance a couple of weeks ago to hang with Rasmus for almost half an hour. That guys a beaut! Good kid and good attitude which goes miles in hows he developed I am sure. As for Sven I dont see him as having these same attributes which I think hurt his development.

What Johnny has become is what I wanted Sven to be. Man have the times changed.

I was getting pumped about Rasmus dropping the gloves with Sven and then I actually read the thread.

Andersson hands down. The kid is already a reliable NHL defenseman with room to grow. I do not see him as a superstar but a steady, play in all situations long time defenseman that any team would kill for.
Sven is a dime a dozen NHL forward that you probably won't notice when he's not playing. I'm glad he's doing well as I have no ill will towards the guy but honestly don't give two ####s about him anymore and had even forgotten we got Andersson from that deal. Andersson is a beauty and will be long after Sven is done.

I'll take the defenseman who already looks a lot more valuable then Sven.
No insult to Sven, but he's cookie dough soft, isn't a great scorer which is compounded by his lazy attitude without the puck.

I understand he will, however, be playing tonight. Should we expect to notice him?

You have a 26 year old injury prone winger that's eclipsed 30 points once in his career and a 22 year old defenseman who's been a top level player in junior, AHL, and already a competent defensemen early into his NHL career. My thought is that the Flames made out very well on this trade.

while Baertschi bears responsibilty for how things ended in Calgary and by extension I suppose his developmental trajectory he is actually also a great person from what we know of him

Well, when an average player is out of the line up and you don't notice, as in you don't miss what little production he provides I would also wager you barely notice when he is in the lineup.
