Flames Beast of the East vs Best in the West*. 7pm MT. SNW

*yes technically the Jets are first in the western conference because they have 1 game in hand, but the rhyme doesn't work otherwise.

US

The Flames are coming off a double rarity this season: A loss that was a shutout. In the final tilt of their recent three-game road swing in which they finished 2-1, they fell 2-0 to the Dallas Stars Tuesday night. Travis Hamonic led the Flames with four shots in the loss, while Johnny Gaudreau , Mark Giordano and Noah Hanifin had three. David Rittich stopped 26 shots in his third straight start. "We weren't sharp and it showed right from the start," said Giordano. "I think they looked like the faster team but only because they were committed to putting pucks in and forechecking. For whatever reason, we were fighting it all night and we weren't making clean plays. Not to take anything away from them, they played a hard fought game but I don't think we were sharp enough, for sure." … The Flames had outscored the opposition 15-8 in their previous three games, including a 7-2 pasting of the Blues Sunday in St. Louis.

THEM

The Lightning are currently the toast of the league, sitting first overall with 54 points. They have scored a league-high 143 goals and have a +44 goal differential, both marks significantly outpacing the teams trailing in second. Tampa Bay is 9-0-1 in its last 10 games, the most recent a 5-2 win over the Canucks in Vancouver on Tuesday. Nikita Kucherov - playing in his 400th NHL game - got the visitors on the board just before the midway point of the first, with Tyler Motte and Cedric Paquette stretching the lead to 3-0 after 20 minutes. Adam Erne scored the lone marker of the second period to close the gap for Vancouver and Chris Tanev tallied at 5:46 of the third to make it a one-goal game. The rally ended there, though, as Steven Stamkos and Ondrej Palat scored in the final three minutes to seal the deal. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 36 saves for the Lightning … Tampa Bay's current 10-game point streak is tied for the fourth longest in franchise history (record: 18-straight games with a point, 14-0-4, in 2003-04).

US vs. THEM

The two clubs met twice last year, each winning on the road. The Flames skated to a 5-1 win in Tampa on Jan. 11 and looked in good shape to win the second tilt in Calgary on Feb. 1, building a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes. But the Lightning rattled off five straight goals in an eventual 7-4 victory at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Tampa is an awful scrappy team this year, things might get heated tonight.

Even after all of the changes this offseason, I still feel like that bottom six is a hot mess. Just seems like a bunch middling-to-poor players randomly thrown together. Frolik would make it look a lot better.

Treliving suggested this morning (on the radio) that Frolik would be back after the Christmas break. Good sign that is on track if he's out there skating.

Looks like he is just skating with the team. Treliving said this morning Frolik likely back after Christmas.

That Vancouver game looked like a great tilt. Got me all riled up for this one!

Hope we can see Bennett and Neal back tonight (Frolik coming back can't happen soon enough either) and they're both ready to play a heavy game.

No idea what to expect tonight, but man am I excited!

Just Win! can't lose 2 in a row in such a tight race in the Pacific. I don't even care if its in the shootout.

I hope they play just like they did against the Jets.

Starting to wonder if they may deal or waive Czarnik when Frolik comes back.
