Hey havent seen any topic on this yet, just wondering if anyone else had picked up the the Franz Ferdinand CD. Only had a chance to listen to it a couple times but it sounds pretty good. Seems to lack that infectious, cant get it outta my head song that was Take me out.

I picked it up along with the new Nickleback...pretty damn good. While it does lack that infectiousness of the first album, it's musically more distinct and energetic. Tons of good songs, and the lesser stuff on this album is better than the lesser stuff on the first album.
All the above comments are about the new Franz Ferdinand album, by the way.

My mother said if I can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. So I'll let a reviewer of the new Nickelback CD say it:
http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&t...10:9gez97ifkrgt
Sure, they stretch a little bit, but they still favor clumsy, plodding riffs, still incessantly rewrite the same chords and melody, still harmonize exactly the same way on every song, Kroeger still sounds as if he's singing with a hernia, he still writes shockingly stupid lines . . . he still shows no discernible sense of humor. Which means, despite all their newly developed relative nuances, Nickelback remain unchanged: they're still unspeakably awful.
Check out these highly rated new CDs instead:
Wolf Parade (Canadian):

Broken Social Scene (Canadian):

Metric "Live It Out" (Canadian).
Nickelback notwithstanding, this is a new golden age in Canadian music. Some of the best CDs of the last two years were Canadian: Arcade Fire (MTL), Wolf Parade (MTL), Weakerthans(WIN), Broken Social Scene(TOR), New Pornograpers (VAN), Hot Hot Heat (VIC) Tegan & Sara (CGY) Metric (TOR).

I agree, Canadian music is probably amongst the best and most original in the world right now, especially of the indie rock persuasion.
I personally find Franz Ferdinand highly overrated...they will be forgotten quickly. Yes, they have some catchy stuff, but so did Duran Duran.
Another band everyone must check out is My Morning Jacket (American). Their new album "Z" is astonishing. One of the best bands in the world right now IMO.

First off: I second your Eeewww
Secondly: I picked up the new Coheed, but havn't listened to it much yet. From what little I have heard, it sounds alot like the last 1.
Also picked up new Blackalicious, which is really good and the new Death Cab which is decent and has a reference to Calgary in 1 song. Still havn't got around to checking out the new Franz.

Ahh yes Death Cab.. I heard that and wondered why Calgary.. Maybe Ben Gibbard is a Flames fan :P
Coheed's last album was the soundtrack to my days during the playoffs in 04

You guys should check out a band called Cuff The Duke from Oshawa. They are somewhere between Blue Rodeo and Sloan. Really great music and really great live show. I think they will go places.
EDIT: Look at that, they are playing in Calgary on Friday. You guys should go!

I randomly listened to that at the record store and thought it sounded like Sloan. Didn't really interest me at the time, but can't make a fair judgment on such a short listen.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but another poster recently mentioned Trail of Dead and I have since listened to a few of their songs from their Web site.
I've really liked what I've heard and want to buy some of their stuff for an upcoming road trip. I'm embarrassed to say I'd never heard of them before...are their CDs available at any mainstream music store and which albums are the best - I see they have a bunch of them.

Never worry about hijacking the thread when it comes to trail of dead.
Im not overly familiar with their older stuff but Source Tags & Codes is absoulutely amazing, one of my favorite cd's of all time, and the new one Worlds Apart is very good. Worlds Apart has Will You Smile Again which the Flames came out to in the preseason, and All White makes me think of Pink Floyd everytime i hear it, very cool.

I've seen Trail of Dead 3 times, and they are consistently awesome time and time again.
Source Tags & Codes is a fantastic record, and nearly flawless throughout. World's Apart; which is their most recent record, is also quite good, but does suffer from the switch to major label stigma that most band's don't seem able shake quite easily. And odd mix of rockers and sleepers on that record.
If you have any questions about them, or their prior-ST&C's releases, I'd be happy to offer some recommendations. If you can find it, do try to purchase or download Claire De Lune off of their record 'Madonna'
Speaking of Hipsters .... went to see Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! and the National at Sonar the other night. CYHSY! is the current 'Pitchfork loves us so the indie-world-must-be-fawning-over-us' band. With that aside, they were pretty good. Lots of sound and tech issues, but a decent performance over all.
Download: The Skin Of My Yellow Country Teeth - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
The band that surprised me the most was co-headling act 'The National'. They played an extremely tight set, and their lead singer was ace. Had no idea they had put out 3 records already, and their latest - Alligator, is on heavy rotation on my 'pod.
Download: Mr. November - The National
While we're still on bands, I may as well talk about Wolf Parade. I saw them a couple weeks ago in a shady after-hours nightclub down on Hastings and they were freakin' awesome. Their latest LP - Apologies To The Queen Mary is definitely in my top 3 of 2005, and I think will be a very important record as far as indie-rock in the mid '00's goes. Definite hints of Modest Mouse and Butler and Co' (Arcade Fire), but tremendously put together.
Download: Shine A Light - Wolf Parade
EDIT: My God, I cannot type for a shinguard.

I agree with this completely. Start with "Source Tags and Codes". Great album.
