Icon48 Executive committee recommends to proceed with expansion to Seattle pending BOG vote

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Gary Bettman on Seattle meeting this morning: "It was a good, interactive meeting." Says the Executive Committee's formal recommendation was to proceed with the expansion application. Subject to completing the process and a formal vote in December by the Board of Governors

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
So to recap: still some due diligence to be done on Seattle's part but all is pointing to a full Board of Governors vote on Seattle expansion come Dec. 3-4. Bettman says launch of team in fall of 2020 would be ideal but depends on some factors

If this goes through when is the expansion draft likely to take place? 2019 or 2020?

Well if they are launching the team in fall 2020, the expansion draft would be in summer 2020.

But the biggest issue is that there is a very real possibility that 2020/21 is a lockout year. If there is a lockout, I imagine they would delay the launch at least a year.

Key Arena renovations okayed by Seattle city council. Sounds like this is a go.

Chris Johnston @reporterchris
Gary Bettman confirms what @Sportsnet reported in March: The Vegas Golden Knights won't participate in the expansion draft for Seattle.

Otherwise, same protection rules remain.

If the cab is set to expire, then it would give the players a bit of leverage; however, in the end the owners will win again

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Bettman would not divulge potential re-alignment plans other than to say there won't be a massive re-alignment. If I had to guess, I would say Seattle goes into the Pacific and Arizona goes into the Central

Wonder if it would be smart to dangle Neal out there for them in two years.

Time will tell I guess.

Barring a major shift in direction, I’d say one of our defensemen is as good as gone. We got a gimme with Vegas but I expect the Seattle draft is gonna hurt.

Since the rules are the same does anyone know if Dube and Valimaki will be exempt (assuming they continue to be full-time NHLers) if the expansion draft is 2020 or 2021(assuming at least a partial season for 2020-21)?

So...Steve Yzerman for VP hockey ops, Ken Holland for GM, Dave Tippett for coach?

I don't see us losing a defenseman. I think we'll be able to leave Giordano unprotected, meaning we'll be able to cover our other contracted vets. I think we lose a forward, but not one that will have a significant impact to the overall success of the team. Flames are in a good position fro the expansion draft IMO.

Houston fits right into central. Question is which Pacific team will be relocating there?

We'll see. I have a feeling Giordano will still be an important part of the team. Some posters wanted to leave Giordano unprotected last expansion draft because of his contract. I think Giordano would almost certainly be picked if available. He would be great pick up for an expansion team.

He would be 38 in 2020 not sure how important he will be at that time. Also really depends how the Flames do the next few years.

This makes just as much sense as Seattle owning a basketball team

Calgary Flames.
Gong show with city hall and the Olympics will force Edwards to want to not only keep his $600M instead of building a new rink, but will increase his internal greed and decide that now is the time to cash in and sell the Flames for $600M to Houston.

Yzerman is not going to go farther from his family. He will be the next GM of Detroit.
