Wow...you could have watched the same thing on Leno's "Jay walking". Many people don't have a clue, it's well established. But the Australia thing was pretty fun.

That is pathetic.
The sad part is they probably didn't have to spend several days looking to find that many morons.
I'd like to see the tape of people that actually know what's going on that they approached. I'm assuming there were a few.

Well not to mention the fact he is apparently unaware of the fact that the largest muslim population on earth is in SE Asia (Indonesia and Malaysia). With other large populations in Africa, Central Asia, and Russia.
That is hilarious about Australia/Korea! I wonder how many SOUTH Koreans realize that if America actually went after North Korea (and they won't, but...) they would be lumped together with the northerners in the minds of most average American joes.

Also, the one chick who said Iran "because she feels a revolution coming", wouldn't that be problem solved for the americans anyways? whats the point of invading a country you were going to force into having the same poitical system as you so do don't have to be so insecure about yourself if they have already done it?

Is it just me but the country he keeps getting people to flag is Australia. He just has Iran or North and South Korea typed over it. The comparisson of North and South Korea is actually Australia to New Zealand.

Yes, he's proving how dumb we are.
It sounded to me like the journalist has an Australian accent, which probably explains why he chose that particular strategy.
Things like this make Americans look worse than COPS does.

I dont mean to be stereotypical, but I wonder if they did this in Canada if we would see similar results (obviously all countries have uneducated people) but is Canadas over-all education system better than in the states?

Depends on the editor of the tape. You could probably put something like this together on Steven Avenue Mall tomorrow at lunch and just take out the people that answered the questions correctly.
Overall though I think our education system is performing better than the American system. Doesn't mean you couldn't find 10 random morons on the street in any town in Canada and make a little tape of them being stupid.

National Geographic did a test on this a few years ago. Of the nine industrialized countries that participated, only Mexica fared worse than the US in knowledge of geography and world events. To be fair, Canada did better than the US, but not by much.
http://www.nationalgeographic.com/ge...ighlights.html
Quote:
Among young Americans’ startling knowledge gaps, the study found that
• nearly 30 percent of those surveyed could not find the Pacific Ocean, the world’s largest body of water;
• more than half—56 percent—were unable to locate India, home to 17 percent of people on Earth; and
• only 19 percent could name four countries that officially acknowledge having nuclear weapons.
|
Nearly one American in three can't identify the Pacific Ocean?!
[Edit]
Looking at the individual questions is particularly glaring; on the "What is the current population of the United States?" question, every other nation scored better than the US. Crazy.

And that's what we'll never know- how many people did they have to go through to find these handful of people?
And while I have met my share of Americans who are deficient in North American geography, I'm sure not all of them could be that uneducated.

There are idiots on every block of every city in every country in the world.
As Rouge says, it wouldn't be hard to put that tape together on the Stephen Avenue Mall . . . . and you could probably do it using nothing but people in suits too.

Well, I'm kind of a geography nerd so when I come across people like this it p*sses me off. I can actually get swallowed up looking at maps and be worthless for hours as a result. Especially when I happen to be using those maps to link up some history I may be reading. Early maps of NW Montana are freaking gold to me right now.
Whenever playing Trivial Pursuit, I always kick ass in the geography category. I've noticed it's the most difficult for most people I've played against. Also, when watching Trebek I always perk up when there's a geography category.
I should've been a geographer, but 15 years ago when these decisions should have been made I was under the impression that since 99.99% of the world had been explored the only thing one could do with a geogrpahy degree is teach geography. Little did I know that GPS would expand the field so much. Damn it.
I don't know as much about Canadian geography as I'd like but I'm decent with the BC interior. You can't touch me on the US I'll bet. I rule. :P
