Will Matthew Tkachuk be the Flames next captain?
For the record, I think Giordano will be able to play at a high level for at least the next several seasons, so a lot can still happen between now and when Gio hangs them up. I do think it's an important discussion to have on here though, given Tkachuk's start to the year and his track record during his time as a Flame. I'm a big believer in Monahan as one of the leaders of this team, but to me Tkachuk has more captain qualities than anyone on the roster not named Giordano. He's vocal, he brings it every night, he drags this team into the fight when they need a boast. Him and Giordano, in my opinion, are integral to the heart and soul of this team. When both players are hot this team is a different animal.
I'd like to hear what some other people think about this. I'm sure some would be worried about having someone who plays the "pest" role as captain. I don't view Tkachuk as a pest, he's an incredibly unique player who knows when it's proper to agitate the other team, while never sacrificing other parts of his game. This thread may also be a bit premature but just watching him this season I have come to the conclusion that the question isn't if Tkachuk will become the Flames captain but when.
This is also my first time starting a thread on the main board, so if the mods feel this question could be posted in another Tkachuk thread I totally understand.
Cheers

I'm not sure. How many teams have had greasy guys as captains? I always assumed Monahan would be Gio's successor but it's years away and a lot can change.

I think having Chucky as an A is perfect for him. He's already a leader in the locker room.
Mony IMO is going to be the next Flames Captain.

I prefer Bennett as captain.
I want Tkachuk to be a rat and you don't want your rat as a captain.
From a physical standpoint, Bennett does all the things that Iggy did. He just needs to score more consistently.

Matthew will be the next Flames captain.
Monahan can keep his A.

Figured Monahan has been being groomed for that spot since he got here.
Not sure what he is like in the locker room so at this point I figure it's still Monahan but really it's either or, doesn't really matter. I can't wait for the video where Gio passes the bunch of pencils on to the next Captain.

I think Tkachuk’s on ice and off ice leadership skills over come the “greasy” parts to his game. You can just tell on the ice that this is his team, he’s always the first to come in to protect teammates and just always seems to have the right attitude on the ice, no matter if it’s a close game or not. He comes up with clutch goals and plays time and time again as well. Not saying Monahan doesn’t as well, I just see Tkachuk making this his team this year. Like Burke said yesterday, when he talks to Tkachuk it’s like talking with Giordano, and Tkachuk is 20.

Monahan is the safe choice. Tkachuk is the right choice.

I think Giordano will be like Ray Bourque for the Flames and around till he is close to 50
Chucky will be an assistant in my mind

To all of you that pick Monahan ... what do you see in him?
I'm not challenging you. I'm genuinely curious.
To me, he just seems like a very quiet, even keeled guy. Not overly vocal.

This.
I see Monahan as the 'straight man' which allows Chucky the freedom to play his game.
Its rare that a pest, regardless of how talented, wears the 'C.'
That being said, you dont need a letter on your chest to be a leader.

Suggestion:
Let Monahan wear the C after Giordano.
Tkachuk can wear a T… for Tkaptain.
I'll show myself out now.

Mark Messier, to an extent. He wasn't a pest, but he was dirty.
Dale Hunter was a captain in Washington.
Steve Ott in Buffalo.
The one I can't believe I missed.... Theoren Fleury was captain in Calgary for a couple of years!
