Default Let's Talk About Those Who Die While taking a Selfie

Some of the "hyperbole" in this article made me laugh:

https://calgaryherald.com/news/world...1-38016a435ae8

For example "The selfie deaths have become a major public health problem". Personally, I would hardly consider 250 deaths world wide over a period of 6 years to be a major problem.

While I am sure the relatives are saddened the deaths of these shutterbugs, many of us are thinking about darwinism at work.

Blows my mind that we need to establish warnings in places about selfies. But it also stuns me that videos on the internet can persuade people to eat detergent.

This thread saved my life. Just this afternoon I was about to take a selfie while laying on the Ctrain tracks and after I read the article and found out I could die, I decided against it.

So yeah, I'd say it was a necessary thread.

Can you reasonably argue that somebody with a selfie-stick might have been trying to attack you? You could maybe call it, selfie defense.

They're called Darwin Awards, and we've been issuing them since the mid 1800s. This is not news.

Lots of consensus here.

I wonder how many pictures of duck lips while falling at terminal velocity the world is missing out on.

With all due respect to the fallen

I wonder if there is actually an increase in deaths. Having people take pictures perched on the edges of cliffs or doing stupid things has always been around. Does the selfie add more risk? This article is insufficient to tell if it’s a new problem

I found this quote from the article hilarious:
Quote:
If you’re just standing, simply taking it with a celebrity or something, that’s not harmful

There has been a few selfie related deaths in my part of the world lately. One happened last week and another two occurred during the whale watching season.

I am not sure what can be done to prevent any of this. Some people just take stupid risks and no amount of signage and fencing will stop them.

I'd venture to guess that the world of Instagram and Twitter has had a statistical effect on the amount of deaths. I was surprised not to see the Shannon Falls incident mentioned in the article. Or the word hubris. Or vanity. Or stupidity.

WTF ever happened to Common Sense? It seems less and less people actually have it.
