Flames Oct 2 Practice notes

If you missed it in the other thread, new numbers for Dube 29 and Valimaki 8

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
Rasmus Andersson is not out there this morning. He joins Peluso, Mangiapane, and Gillies as absentees.

Presumably all four will start the season in the AHL. #Flames

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
Curtis Lazar is practicing with the #Flames once again this morning. Final roster comes out this afternoon, guessing around noon Calgary time.

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
#Flames at practice today; expect this tomorrow in Van:

Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Tkachuk-Backlund-Frolik
Dube-Ryan-Neal
Bennett-Jankowski-Czarnik

Giordano-Brodie
Hanifin-Hamonic
Valimaki-Stone

Smith
Rittich

Not sure if I like the 3M line being back together, I'd hope to have Neal/Czarnik on it over Frolik.

Its Peters. The lines will be mixed up throughout the game I think.

Those forward lines are going to produce wave after wave of attack...they actually get faster as they move down the lineup. I can’t believe how much faster this team got in the offseason, and with Dube making the team.

So excited for the season. No matter what happens it’s going to be entertaining as hell.

They hopefully will play a lot like Vegas. I've seen it already. Super fast transition game.

Lazar, Hathaway & Prout there for game time decisions or fill in for a healthy scratch.

Any extended injuries they will call up Mangiapane, Foo, Andersson or Gillies.

I get the sentiment but I think the lineup is predicated on the Backlund line getting the majority of defensive zone starts, while the Ryan line will functionally be a second scoring line with heavy sheltering and lots of offensive zone face-offs. Under those conditions I would much prefer to have Frolik with Backlund and Neal with Ryan and the rookie in scoring situations.

There is scoring on every line, but a clear split between zone-situations. Two offensive zone lines (Monahan and Ryan); two defensive zone lines (Backlund and Jankowski); four lines that can score.

Bennett-Jankowski-Czarnik

This line is going to play with pace. The thing I like about it is that Bennett and Jankowski are both big guys who will fair well against the prototypical heavy 4th line. That said, they will be difficult to contain as all of these players move very well.

The revitalized bottom six has me very excited for tomorrow!

I know that we hate the 3M line right now, but it’s probably so that we have one line that has familiarity with each other. Should be temporary.

It’s been proven to work over two full NHL seasons even under Gulutzan’s coaching. I can see why they are reluctant

The Dube/Ryan/Neal line should be fun to watch.

I can see 3M being deployed as a shutdown line against the Canucks for the first two games. After that, the training wheels come off and we see Czarnik and/or Neal get bumped up.

What?
I love that 3M line is back together.
I think Frolik bounces back this year, the other two guys I'm not too worried about.

Wow. It sucks that Neal is on the 3rd line, but that 3rd line against poorer pairings could be dynamite.

I like the balance.

Also....Brodano is back and it feels so, so good!

Don't forget that Frolik was playing well until his injury last season and didn't look the same after. Let's see how he starts the season healthy and was fittest Flame in testing. Good to have Neal/Czarnik as options though.

Backlund centers the shutdown line.
Toughest zone starts, toughest competition.
This is not a line for James Neal. It's not really a line for Czarnik either.
I like it.
