So as most of you probably know, I had to close down RecklessCaution due to the fact that our hosts were no longer able to store our videos for us.
So I've been trying to figure out how to upgrade my site do allow us to actually host our own videos.
We're registered through 1and1.com, but I really have no idea if this is a good choice or not.
We have the "1&1 Professional Package Preview" package.
Here are the possible upgrades that I can find:
Comparison
Would the home package provide what I am looking for?
Realistically all the other features that come with these aren't necessary for what our site is.
Any advice would be great!

And I'm not sure the amount of downloads our videos got, but we had on average 2,500+ visitors per month. Our max was 4,000+ last July.

I've heard a number of good things about dreamhost.
Always to got http://www.webhostingtalk.com and do a search for a host if you are considering them. There's also offers from hosts there as well.

I mean I got onto an amazing deal, $9.24 for a year. It was a promotion I got through someone here on the board, but even at regular price it is an amazing deal and very simple to use. Granted I am not hosting a heavy message board like this, but I would recommend it.
I have almost 5.5 GB of disk space, registrations are easy, transfers were very simple, and the ease of use is fantastic.
I like it.

You could always host the site yourself... but Shaw probably won't give you that much bandwidth if people are downloading huge files.

The easiest way to upgrade your band width is to hire Rita McNiel to be your drummer.

Unless you don't care about your visitors that's a very bad idea. You don't get your own domain email addresses (unless you set up a static IP and a mail server), you are limited to the transfer limits of your connection (30 or 50GB on Shaw), you are limited by your upload bandwidth, your own computer use can be affected by others use of your site (good luck playing BF2 while dozens are downloading a video at lower than modem speeds), you have to do all your own sysadmin, and a myriad of other reasons.
Go with a reliable hosting provider for a small monthly fee and you avoid all of that.

This is all so confusing, so I think I may just stick with 1and1, not upgrade, and then try hosting my videos on various upload sites...
Such as megaupload, etc.
Thanks for the help guys.
If you have any other suggestions, feel free to pass them on!

It really depends. Number of visitors doesn't really mean much, getting the stats on how how much data was transferred would really give you the best idea as to what kind of plan you'd need.
1and1 is pretty decent so far (I have one of their free accounts from a while back). They've had their ups and downs speed wise but have generally improved.
You could start with their small package and monitor your usage to see if you need more. They start with 25GB transfer so you'd just have to watch it and see how your transfer goes. If you are comfortably within that at the end of the month, no problem. If you aren't or go over way before, then you know you need to upgrade.
Or as you say you could go with some of those other upload sites. Just don't pick ones that require registration or make people jump through hoops or wait to get the file; if they have to register or wait most will simply not do it.

my (unfortunately now closed) business used 1and1 as a host, and they always seemed to do the job ,and do it well. never had any problems at all.
you could try using bittorrent to distribute your files... you'd have to do some reading up, but given you're distributing stuff you've made its all entirely legal and above board. there's a way of setting up bittorrent to run on a web server so it sends the data itsself, and then when you're on the net you can share the load, and whoever downloads your movies will share them too as they get them.
like i say, it'd require a bit of reading up, but if you're interested i'll hunt out some sites / pages to start you off. but i'll do that tommorrow, cos it's gone 2am here
