Default Sports Your Kids Play

Being a parent of a kid who plays multiple sports is rewarding, time consuming, and expensive. Overall it's pretty cool forming a bond and friendship with a parent group you get to know over the years. So what sports do your kids play?

The daughter plays basketball and loves volleyball in junior high but her main passion is softball (fastpitch). She's second year U13 and made the Div1 A team for the first time this year so the travel and commitment has been a big step up. She mostly plays first base and pitches some as well.

What do your kids play?

My 9yr old plays Hockey and Box Lacrosse. Honestly I much prefer lacrosse and wish it was as big up here as it is in Calgary. Even though he's only a 1st year U11 this year he's one of the scoring leaders on his team and is affiliated with a U13 team so has gotten to play up a couple of times. Sherwood Park is putting together a U11A travel team for Calgary's big lacrosse tournament so fingers crossed he makes it and we get to play more lacrosse.

It sucks the season is so short and there's no real avenue for off season training here like there is in Calgary. Hockey is fun too but box lacrosse is such an intense sport. I never played growing up but my kid loves it and it's way more exciting to watch than minor hockey. I would recommend it to anyone - ESPECIALLY if you have girls that might be interested. We know quite a few girls and their parents that are in lacrosse and they absolutely love it. Lots of comments about how much the girls enjoy the physicality that they don't really get anywhere else in their lives and it creates super tight knit teams once they hit the age they split off from the boys (u11).

My kids are older now.

21 yr old daughter only played/plays hockey. She was good, not great. We have played a few beer league seasons together

19 yr old son played hockey, lacrosse, wrestled, ran track and rugby. He is now only playing and focusing on rugby.

Expose kids to a lot of sports.

My oldest didn’t like team sports, so did martial arts, springboard diving, climbing, long-boarding, and mountain biking.

The youngest played hockey, soccer and baseball.

Both ski.

If I ever have another life I'm going to open a sports league.

My oldest daughter (12) swims competitively (3-4 days a week), plays on the travel volleyball team (which thankfully just ended), skis competitively 3 days a week, has taken an interest in mountain biking and has now decided that running is a good way to spend her down time. Beach volleyball just fired up too. Which isn't TOO bad because it's beside the local bike trails.

My younger daughter (10) likes to ski race, mountain bike, run and draw and play the piano. She now wants to play baseball for some strange reason, and start in volleyball. I'm pushing her towards arts and instruments.

Both also LOVE to camp, wakesurf and Efoil.

As a recently divorced single dad I have determined I need another job.

Oldest does climbing, which has gotten very expensive since she's made nationals the past few years.

Youngest does horse jumping.

They do all the usual fun stuff: bike, ski, skate, swim, canoe, paddleboard, tennis, squash.

Haha you got sucked into horses. I can't even imagine. Mind you it's probably cheaper than a boat.

Both my kids play basketball (rec), and ski.

The older one plays baseball and really wants to play a travel ball season.

Around $400/mth. Thank god she doesn't compete.

I'm glad your son has made the transition from high school/minor club rugby to the men's game. My son didn't and I hope it's just a temporary break from the sport.

I'm not sure if you are in the city but clubs always welcome returning players.

I can help him get involved with me club (the best in the Province) if you want.

Do they know about triathlons?

I remember being in school with a kid in Jr high who was always telling us he was in Canmore on the weekends. One day he told us he competed in biathlon. I think he also mentioned he was looking into triathlons. I cannot remember his name.

No idea why his name suddenly popped into my head, but I remember another unassuming kid named Keith Pritchard who would occasionally mention he loved playing squash. Most of us had no clue what that sport was at the time. I just looked him up. I had no clue he was that good.

My son aged out a couple of years ago, hockey and soccer. I really miss being on the ice/bench. Daughter is still in ringette.

My niece did synchronized swimming. The pressure on the parents to fundraise was immense.

Yeah the oldest is going to do a triathlon this summer. Apparently the swim is the hardest for the young kids and all she has to swim is 200m which she can do in well under 2 minutes.

Not that I need another sport for her to try (or more bikes) but here we are.

She can swim 200m in "well under" 2 minutes? That's amazing.

The current womens world record for 200m freestyle is 1 minute 52 seconds, so she's very close especially considering her age.
