No unknowns other than $.

Wow, I actually think thats a really good deal.
Its high dollars right now but the back half of that contract is going to be very manageable under a higher salary cap.

I hate this deal because Gibson is one of the better goalies in the league, plays for the Ducks, and he always finds a way to beat our ass. And he's only 25...
Not looking forward to the Flames facing him for another 8 years. I'm eagerly awaiting the day the Ducks start to finally slide down the standings into mediocrity. But shrewd signings like this one unfortunately will keep them around for longer

Considering what the Carey Price deal looked like, Gibson is a guy who over the last 3 years has had a over .920 svpct and 14 shutouts, this is a great deal.
The Habs failed because they paid Price a massive amount of money which handicapped the Habs cap wise, this deal doesn't and they got one of the best in his position in the league for just over 6 million dollars which is really good.

Indeed. It irks me.

It's risky signing goalies to long term deals. Hopefully Gibson starts mailing it in.

How many goalies in history have put together a 10 year run of being an elite starter
I think it’s a fair deal for both sides . Goalies are a huge risk long term, so Gibson gets a ton of guaranteed $$$. Ducks get a solid cap hit and can worry about the risk way down the road

One of the more underrated goalies out there. Personally I consider him pretty close to top 5
Price
Holtby
Bobrovsky
Quick
Vasilevskiy
Hellebuyck
Murray
Hes right around Murray and Hellebuyck imo. Still young too.
Great contract

I don't really like the deal. Imo not worth signing more than 3-5 goalies (price, quick, Rask and maybe bobrovsky or Rinne) in this league for more than 4 years at a time. Even legit starting goalies are notorious for taking large steps back and having confidence issues (halak, Talbot, Murray, holtby, even Rinne at times etc). Gibson is not a top 5 goalie in the league so don't see the value in signing him for 8 years.
Would rather pay a bit more for the ability to reassess after 3 or 4 years...I'm not saying his game regresses, but I'm saying there's a material probability he does at some point over the next 8 and never recovers.

Pekka Rinne is 35-years/old, has played over 600 NHL games, and you would consider signing him for +4 years? That’s nutty.
I think this is a very good deal for one of the best young goalies in the League. I don’t know that I would opt for signing any goalie to an eight-year contract, but Gibson is a player for whom I think it is more easily justified.
It is unfortunate for him the the Ducks are going to suck, and fall into oblivion over the length of his deal.

Doesn't he kinda do it already?
I feel like he leaves hurt late in games quite often.
He's a fantastic goaltender, no question about that. He has yet to show that he is durable.

Only a limited group of players I'd feel good about signing for 8 years, and not one is a goalie.
Even Price's long term deal is already looking sketchy.
At least he's on the younger side.

If you believe in WAR ratings to measure player contributions to the team, Gibson was by far the best goalie last year in that metric, and the only goalie in the top 30 players in the league. This is a steal of a deal for a goalie that will probably win a Vezina or two over the span of that contract.
As a Flames fan, this sucks.

Sorry - I misspoke. I meant players of his quality. Was referring to renne is his prime, not renne today. Poorly written post on my part.
