Sporting News Prospect Rankings
I've always like Steve Kournianos
Ranking
Quote:
21. Calgary Flames
Time will tell if the steep price in draft picks the Flames paid to land defenseman Travis Hamonic will be worth it, but the parent club is oozing with youth, with more on the way. Defenseman Juuso Valimaki, their top pick in 2017, is both physically and mentally ready to handle the rigors of the AHL, where Calgary has patiently nurtured a handful of NHL-capable players. They received strong minor-league seasons from 2015 draftees Rasmus Andersson and Oliver Kylington, and speedy Dillon Dube was a game-changing two-way forward his entire major junior career.

Many will disagree on rankings ... good for August

I don't understand how Andersson is so far down the list at 6th? No Parson's, I get that he had a bad injury riddled season, but to drop him off of the top 10 is questionable.
I get that the Flames prospect pool should drop due to the loss of Fox and the first round pick. But I look at the Oilers at 17 and the Flames at 21, and I think the Flames group is just plain better.

21st feels about right. No 1st/2nd/3rd this year, no 2nd/3rd last year, no 1st/3rd/4th in 2015 ... that's always going to have an impact in terms of overall depth.
Andersson should be higher on the list obviously.

Sporting News Prospect Rankings
Yeah, I think the overall ranking my is pretty close, but it is ridiculous that the Flames slot in lower than the Oilers.
Also, while it is a fun exercise to rank prospect pools I am starting to really question the value of such exercises. There is so much fluidity between distinguishing young NHL players from prospects, and the rankings change so dramatically from one year to the next that it is difficult to see their fynction.

I'm with CC. How does Parsons not make the list.
Dube is the forward prospect I'm most excited about.
The Flames could put out a speed unit like Foo-Dube-Mangiapagne. That could be fun to watch.

He doesn’t have Parsons in his top 10, seems a bit harsh perhaps putting too much stock into his 1st year pro where he struggled with some injuries.
As I said in our draft polls I think 2-8 (or 7 in his case with no Parsons) are real close in my mind. I can see arguments for various rankings. Interesting to see the author favour our forwards (Mangiapane, Dube and Foo) ahead of Andersson/Kylington. All 3 forwards must be quite happy with the Brouwer buyout as their chances of seeing time on the big club go up. Mangiapane and Foo seem likely to see nhl time as an injury fill in at the least.

Their headline for the Flames seems incredibly accurate to me. I like it.
And who cares where the Oilers are.

I do, because ...
No. Not even The Sporting News and their overly generous (blind?) talent evaluators can save the Edmonton Oilers.
No one can.
No one.

Valimaki not in the sporting news top 50 with a tighter filter (calder eligible only) than the Athletic.
A pretty clear mistake leaving Valimaki out. Cal Foote was also left off the list (anti-WHL biased?)
20 players in the top-50 from the 2017 draft class
PS No Fox in top 50 either. he was #8 in the Carolina prospect list (4th best prospect list) Zykov (7 pts in 10 NHL games last year) was #5 on their list ie their list was pretty deep.
