Arbitrator awards Cody Ceci $4.3 mil
Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Arbitrator awards Cody Ceci $4.3M
Ceci was asking for $6 mil and Sens were asking for $3.35 mil, so slightly skewed to the Sens number.
Middle would have been $4.675 mil
Also just above the walkaway threshold, but would be surprising if Sens don't accept the award.
edit: Strangely enough, the Sens paid Mark Stone $350k more than the expected award for him. Ceci gets $375k less than expected award? Coincidence I think not.

Also I believe Ceci and Hanifin have the same agent, so with this behind them and the Brouwer buyout I would expect the Hanifin contract talks to heat up again.

Is Ceci closer to Hamonic or Stone? either way the price of a 4-5 defense first with limited scoring d-man has gone up fair bit.
Maybe there is a market for Stone.

Did Brouwer make enough cap room for Tkachuk next year? Hanifin at anything more than 4 takes a bite out of next years $19 M cap space looking a Tkachuk and Smith or another #1G

Stone and Frolik will have to go to make room for Tkachuk's contract. Simple as that.

Hanifin is a lot better than Ceci, so we're probably looking at a hit over $5million here aren't we?

Not if we meet in the middle!

Whatever they can do to lock Hanifan up for a longer term, I think you do it, and deal with opening up other cap room next year if need be. But if a guy like Ceci is getting this type of money on a one year deal, and Trouba got what he did. I do think the price of defenseman who can skate looks to be going up.

Are all arbitration awards only 1-year contracts?
And I think the arbitrator sides with Ottawa here. Awarded something just above the walk away threshold and lets Ottawa to decide if they want to re-sign Ceci or let him walk.

Ceci was 5th in even strength time on ice out of all defensemen. Doughty, Gardiner, Burns and Orlov are the only players to play more. And his partner was Phaneuf. One of the major problems is that he was just playing over his head.
Senators didn't put him in a position to succeed, and may have ruined him. But I think he still has potential to be a strong #4 on a good team , maybe #3 on a weaker defense, type player if he can escape Ottawa.
Unfortunately, with Phaneuf gone and if Karlsson is traded, Ceci will be tasked with playing 45 minutes a night.

1 or 2. The party that didn't file for arbitration gets to pick.
Unless the player would be a UFA after 1 year, in which case it has to be 1.
