Flames Management Confidence - Trading
Still can't get my head around the Calgary view of management in the Athletic piece so I'm going to use the fact that it's August to launch a quick topic for every section in that piece along with a poll.
Not very concerned about how confident Torontonians are in Calgary's management but I'm dying to see the Calgarypuck version.

I think Treliving knocks player moves out of the park most of the time. Considering that the vast majority of NHL GMs are hit-and-miss in player trades, his work stands out as exceptional.

Consistently good. There's always going to be be throw-ins, duds, and salary dumps, so it'll never be perfect.
Nobody would deal with Treliving if all he did was fleece trading partners.

I gave him a 4 based on his willingness to shake up the lineup and make difficult trades. There never seems to be a dull moment and he always creates good conversation for and against the moves he makes.
His nickname should be the gambler.

I think that trading is one of Treliving's strengths.

I was really surprised at this ranking in particular in that report, trading has been one of this management team's greatest strengths.

A 4. He swings every single time and brings in good players. Thing is, you cannot know how a team gels. He does his work well, just doesn't pan out on the ice sometimes. I can't give a 5, wasn't a fan of trading consecutive 1sts .

I wish we would keep more of our 1sts but he has gotten good value for them.

Highlights of recent trades for me include Glencross, berra, Russell, first dougie, smith. Hamonic solid value, second dougie TBC.

It's a pretty clear strength. He's able to do things that other teams feel is impossible (first Hamilton trade, 2nd rounder for Berra).
He'll be judged on the Hamilton deal moving forward, and though Car got the best player on paper, I'd suggest the paper is about as soft as he is between the ears as time passes.
I don't like trading 1sts though, and it almost blew up with the lottery this year (kinda), so it's a 4, not a 5.

Edit: now I see there are more polls, should have looked below this thread!

I believe in the Jays.

Was a strength... not so sure now. Don't like Dougie deal 2, don't like Lazar, Stone is now the worst contract on the team. Definitely lower then it was.

Went with a 4, but if Hanifin and Lindholm perform like I'm hoping they will, I think I would change it to a 5.
This is really the only area I think Tre has been great in (although his cap management has been pretty good as well).

Gave it a 3 but close to a 2.
Hamilton trade in felt like a win in spite of reasons previous team gave him away on the cheap. Then he's traded away for the same reasons 2 years later... Due diligence anyone?
Only obvious decent track record treliving has under his belt is re-signing rfas. Trading, ufa, drafting is all highly meh in my opinion.
Talks a solid game though.. So have other previous GMs.

That did not happen.
First Round picks since Treliving was hired: - 2014 - Bennett
- 2015 - Traded on Draft Day as part of Hamilton trade
- 2016 - Tkachuk
- 2017 - Valimaki
- 2018 - Traded at 2017 Draft as part of Hamonic trade
The 2018 first rounder is the only one that has been traded away before its final value was known. No future first round picks have been traded away yet.

3. Has made what looked like good trades on the surface, but nothing major has worked out for the team. Really hopeful that this last deal works out as it will wash away the disappointment of the Hamilton deal. Gotta hope Hamonic turns around, or that is another trade in the bad column, which could drive this grade down another ordinal.

Elite. One of the best traders of assets in the league. I cannot fault a single one of Treliving's trades, and often he has received more than market value for players.

I voted a 3. Some good deals (Dougie MkI, Glencross, Russell), some deals that were meh but didn't really hurt overall (Lack, Shinkaruk, Bollig), and some that turned out to be pretty bad (Lazar, Hamonic, Elliott). Just average.
The Dougie MkII trade (still TBD) will really decide which way that number goes from here. Can't fault him for swinging for the fences though.

Every time Feaster made a trade, I immediately assumed that the organization just got prison-raped.
Conversely, with Treliving, every time I hear there was a trade, I just assume - even before hearing the details - that we won it.
