Default Flames Management Confidence - Roster Building

Still can't get my head around the Calgary view of management in the Athletic piece so I'm going to use the fact that it's August to launch a quick topic for every section in that piece along with a poll.

Not very concerned about how confident Torontonians are in Calgary's management but I'm dying to see the Calgarypuck version.

Poll One - Roster Building

1 - low
5- high

Contract negotiations have to be a 5 for Tre, because of this it gave flames so much More flexibility to build a good roster

So, how does this topic differ from "vision"?

We did well this summer plugging a lot of holes, and cutting out statistical anchors on the team.

That said, the one area that has kept this team as an also-ran is goaltending. Smith is great if he's healthy, and that "if" will get bigger every year. Yes, last year's injury was a fluke, but the inability of any tender in the system to step up was also a problem.

Going back to Hiller and Ramo - yikes, it's a black hole for Calgary. That said, Smith was an attempt to address it, and our current Tending prospects are not without merit.

Went with a 4 on the basis of this summer.

4 . I got high hopes this year. Although, I seem to have high hopes every year. I just keep telling myself that this year is different. But I actually DO think this year will be different. I am fully ready to thoroughly enjoy a season and a long run.

Please.

Just compare this year's roster with last year's. Hamilton, Stajan, Versteeg, Ferland, Bartkowski, Glass, Brouwer, and (injured, old) Jagr out. Hanifin, Lindholm, Neal, Czarnik, and Ryan in. Every single forward line upgraded. Brodie back on the side he plays best, with the partner who best complements him. Tkachuk, Bennett, and Janko maturing, getting stronger and more experienced. Flexibility to have at least one right-handed and one left-handed shot on every line so players can always take face-offs on their strong side. Anyone other than one of the worst PP coaches in league history coaching the man advantage. Using an aggressive, fast-paced system that can take advantage of the team's strengths instead of forcing players to just stand around waiting for someone to strip the puck away or shoot into a blocked lane because the system was so rigid and predictable.

From what I can see, the only question marks are injuries and whether Gio and Smith will start to show some age-related slippage.

Finally, it's exciting to be a Flames fan again!

Gave it a 2. Playoff appearances and actual success speak for themselves.

Too many PTOs and bad bottom of the roster players that have made the team and contributed poorly for me to give a 5. Also, the vision seems to be changing over time, which tells me that Treliving has both grown with the game, but was also slightly wrong in the first place. If you asked me in a year or two, this is probably at a 5.

3. This is really the first year where I can honestly say they have taken a holistic approach to making the roster moves needed to address well known weaknesses. Going after Hamonic really made be scratch my head, especially when it was well known where the gaps were, and defense wasn't a top three issue to be resolved. Good work this off season, but the previous ones were pretty weak.

Agreed. It certainly feels like our excitement may be justified this season. I am finding it hard to curb my excitement actually, but I really am trying. I was excited last year and it turned out to be the most frustrating season in ages. The wife hates when I watch the Flames now. She had no problem when I watched the playoffs though as I was pretty much indifferent to the outcomes. No swearing etc. lol

If we had some kind of long-term answer for the goaltending situation I'd probably say it's a 4. Treliving has mostly done what he can to address holes in the roster, given that we are an undesirable Western Canadian market who doesn't get to pick and choose elite players based on which pyjamas they wore as a kid or having a world-class city like certain other teams get to.

That said, the goaltending outlook is still a question mark, and has been since the day he got here and that to me is inexcusable, so I'm going with a 3.

That sounds very familiar. I wonder if our wives have been comparing notes.

I love the Hamilton trade. It made up for a pretty bad roster last year, but factor in goalie debacles, it’s been a mess for a while. I can’t have too much recency bias

Very good question ...

My take is vision is long term in nature, roster building is shorter term in nature.

You can be good at trading, developing and drafting, adding free agents but do all these moves work together each off season?

I was going to go 3 and went 4 because his biggest roster mistakes should have worked out better than they did.

Goaltending has hurt him time and time again, but I'd say 67% of the time it shouldn't have.

Hiller was a stop gap
Elliott should have been a better option.
Smith got hurt.

Plus we have confirmation that he was in on Fleury and Bishop twice. He's been all over what his roster needs, but has had some bad luck or bridesmaid results that have effected the final roster.

Trust in Tre. Really like how he's revamped the roster for now and for the future.

Out: Hamilton, Ferland, Brouwer, Stajan, Versteeg, Gulutzan, Cameron, Jerrard
In: Hanifin, Lindholm, Neal, Ryan, Czarnik, Peters, Ward, Huska

This has been a huge summer of change and I think most people that watch this team on a regular basis would agree it was needed. Treliving really only had 4 top 6 forwards last year and the addition of Neal and Lindholm fill the 2 empty spots. Being able to add Hanifin really softens the blow of losing Hamilton and the blue line on paper is still an area of strength for this team.

I am still not sold that Peters was the right choice but I am extremely pleased that Gulutzan was not retained.
