Rangers ink D Brady Skjei to six-year contract, ($5.25M AAV)
https://www.tsn.ca/rangers-ink-d-skj...ract-1.1149650
The heck?? 5.25M AAV for this guy through the 2023-24 season who was still in RFA status to boot???
Brady Skjei is good, but not anywhere near worth this much dough.
No good, Rags. No good.

Boy did the Rangers ever get bent over backwards on this contract just to avoid arbitration.

Woah. He's good but not THAT good. Makes more than Brodie now.
Wonder what this means for a Hanifin contract

Skjei is the Rangers' #1 dman right now. Deal doesn't seem that bad. Maybe sets the price for Hanifin?

Honestly, I had never even heard of the guy. I guess I don't pay enough attention to other markets.

So because he's the Rangers #1 d-man, that makes this not so bad a deal?? Seriously??
He may be the Rangers #1 d-man, but he is not an actual #1 or #2 d-man.
This deal is no good.

Ouch. You usually see all the terrible contracts go out in early July to UFAs. This year it’s late July to RFAs.

This will affect Hanafin's contract for sure but this gives Nurse a ton of leverage. Anything that helps bend the Oilers over is good in my books

That seems pretty steep.

This should ensure Nurse would get less than that on a long term contract.
Skjei had 39 points 2 seasons ago.

The Capitals literally just signed a winger who gets the same number of points as Skjei does as a defenseman to a similar deal. At the very least, this deal is better than that.
$5million for 35-ish points from a defenseman is not a steal, but it's not bad IMO. Plus, dmen mature at a later age than forwards, so in theory Skjei's best seasons are ahead of him.

That doesn't make this a not so bad deal. It only makes it a less no good deal than the one for Tom Wilson.

But the guy was still in his RFA years. That's also a lot of money to pay for just one season of 39 points and only slightly more than 2 years of NHL service.

Thats not how Oilers works. Nurse is the best defenceman in the League, possibly ever, they're going to re-name the Norris trophy to the Nurse trophy, he is simply that great and has to be paid as such.
8 years x $7M. Minimum.

*shrug* I wouldn't be upset with a similar deal for Hanifin. I wouldn't be over the moon but I think this is how much it costs for a top 4 defenseman now.

Well from what I've seen Hanifin has more upside and also possesses more skill than Skjei, so Hanifin would be more deserving of that amount.

I think this ensures that Nurse does not accept anything less than $5 m on a long-term deal, which is very good news as it still screws the Oilers pretty hard. Fans over there are pencilling him in at $4 m.

A couple of things to consider with Skjei's contract:
Rangers wanted to avoid arbitration
If he is going to be fed top pairing minutes on a shallower D corps then a bridge is a risk that he gets a big payday on inflated production
Lastly, the Rangers are retooling, so paying more today for cost certainty down the line may be worth it

There were Rangers fans saying that they didn't need Hamilton because Skjei was already better. I mean they're wrong but I think the deal will probably be at value over the long run.
